20. The Half of It alternative: choose by mood
Rather than treating every queer love story as the same kind of comedy, use the list’s range to match your mood: choose Love, Simon or Crush for teen sweetness, Bros for adult dating, Saving Face or A Nice Indian Boy for family pressures, and Pillion for a darker romance. “Rom-com” is a flexible label in queer cinema. Some recommendations are romance-led comedies; others are comedies or coming-of-age stories where queer love is one strand among several. That distinction matters if you want something light, and it also makes room for stories that do not fit the same formula.
Where these films fit in queer cinema
A list of romantic comedies is not the same as a ranking of LGBTQ+ films overall. In the British Film Institute’s 2016 expert poll, more than 100 film experts voted across 84 years of cinema and 12 countries; Carol placed first, Weekend second, and Happy Together third. The poll was about LGBTQIA+ films broadly, not rom-coms specifically, so it offers context rather than a ranking for this list. Read the BFI’s 2016 poll and its context.
Festival programming also shows how queer romantic comedy continues to evolve. BFI Flare’s 2024 programme included What a Feeling, described as a romantic comedy, and the festival announced The Wedding Banquet as its 2025 opening film, calling it a joyful comedy of errors and a reimagining of Ang Lee’s earlier film.
