For viewers looking for the best biopic movies of the 21st century, this is an editorial selection—not a definitive industry ranking. Here, a biopic means a film centered on an individual’s life or a defining stretch of it, rather than a historical event or an ensemble that happens to include real people. The picks span politics, music, sport, art and public life, and favor films that work as cinema as well as portraits of their subjects.

How this list defines a biopic

The boundary is debatable. Rotten Tomatoes uses a narrower rule, focusing on films “squarely about an individual” and excluding The Social Network, The Disaster Artist and The Imitation Game from its guide. Other lists take a broader view: The Week’s January 2026 selection includes The Social Network, alongside more conventionally individual-centered portraits. This list follows the narrower person-centered approach while allowing films to dramatize relationships and historical context.

The choices weigh the lead performance, filmmaking, the way a life opens onto its wider cultural moment, the focus of the period or turning point depicted, and how well the film works for someone unfamiliar with its subject. “Best” remains a judgment, not a consensus: Rotten Tomatoes, The Week and Mandatory published lists with different dates, lengths and inclusion rules.

20 best biopic movies of the 21st century

1. Erin Brockovich

A portrait of the legal clerk who helped build a case against a utility company, this film makes persistence and attention to ordinary people its dramatic engine. Julia Roberts gives the character exuberant force without losing sight of the work behind the eventual public recognition.

2. Walk the Line

Johnny Cash’s story becomes a music biopic about performance, addiction and the complicated bond between Cash and June Carter. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon anchor it with performances that treat the songs as part of the characters’ lives, not just concert highlights.

3. Selma

Rather than attempt a cradle-to-grave account of Martin Luther King Jr., Selma concentrates on the 1965 voting-rights campaign and the march from Selma to Montgomery. That focus gives the film a clear political and dramatic center, while placing King’s leadership within the collective work of the movement.

4. The Queen

Stephen Frears’s film observes Queen Elizabeth II during the public crisis that followed Princess Diana’s death. Helen Mirren’s controlled performance and the film’s dry humor make an unusually intimate drama out of protocol, image and a monarchy negotiating a changed public mood.

5. Julie & Julia

Two lives, separated by decades, meet through food and ambition. The film alternates between Julia Child’s early career and Julie Powell’s attempt to cook through Child’s cookbook, offering a lighter, domestic take on biography that still asks what it means to find a vocation.

6. I, Tonya

This formally playful portrait of figure skater Tonya Harding uses clashing accounts and direct address to make the instability of public narrative part of the story. Margot Robbie’s performance balances bravado and vulnerability, while the film’s style invites viewers to consider how class and media spectacle shape a scandal.

7. Jackie

Pablo Larraín’s close, fragmentary portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy focuses on the days after John F. Kennedy’s assassination and her effort to shape how the nation would remember him. Natalie Portman’s performance gives the film its tension: public composure and private grief are never neatly separated.

8. Marie Antoinette

Sofia Coppola’s impressionistic film approaches the young queen less as a textbook subject than as an isolated person inside an elaborate court. Its modern music and vivid design foreground the distance between private experience and the public image that history leaves behind.

9. Lincoln

Steven Spielberg narrows Abraham Lincoln’s story to the political struggle over the Thirteenth Amendment near the end of the Civil War. Daniel Day-Lewis avoids turning the president into a monument; the film finds drama in persuasion, compromise and the labor of governing.

10. Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan’s portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer follows the physicist from scientific ambition to the moral and political consequences of the atomic bomb project. Its shifting chronology and dense proceedings reward attention, while keeping the central conflict rooted in one person’s public legacy and private responsibility.

11. Maestro

Bradley Cooper’s film centers on the partnership between composer Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre, rather than treating Bernstein’s musical career as a sequence of achievements. Carey Mulligan’s presence makes the marriage a subject in its own right, and the film’s changes in style reflect the different eras it traverses.

Rank #3

12. Christine

Antonio Campos’s film follows television reporter Christine Chubbuck in the weeks before her 1974 on-air suicide. Rebecca Hall’s restrained performance resists reducing Chubbuck to a sensational headline; the film is most affecting as an account of isolation and the pressures of local television news.

13. Rocketman

Elton John’s early life and rise to fame are filtered through a fantasy-musical form rather than a strictly realist one. Taron Egerton’s performance and the imaginative staging make the film’s emotional shifts legible through the songs, while its approach signals that this is interpretation, not a documentary record.

14. Ong-Bak

While many biopics focus on political leaders or celebrities, a life story can also illuminate a craft and its cultural setting. This martial-arts-centered pick brings Tony Jaa’s screen presence to the fore; it is a looser fit for the person-centered definition than the titles above, and belongs here as a performance-led portrait rather than a conventional cradle-to-grave biography.

15. Frida

Julie Taymor’s portrait of painter Frida Kahlo embraces the visual intensity of Kahlo’s art while tracing the relationships and physical pain that shaped her life. Salma Hayek brings charisma to a figure whose work and public identity are inseparable.

16. Ray

Taylor Hackford’s film follows musician Ray Charles through formative years, career breakthroughs and struggles with addiction. Jamie Foxx’s performance is its center of gravity, portraying the musician’s singularity without making the story’s hardships feel like mere obstacles on the way to acclaim.

17. Milk

Gus Van Sant’s film chronicles Harvey Milk’s political rise and activism in San Francisco, grounding a personal portrait in the wider fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Sean Penn’s performance captures the force of Milk’s public persona while the film keeps community and coalition in view.

18. La Vie en Rose

This nonlinear portrait of French singer Édith Piaf moves between stages of her life, using Marion Cotillard’s transformative performance to hold the fragments together. The structure reflects memory’s unevenness, though it asks viewers to piece together a life rather than follow a simple chronology.

19. Man on the Moon

Milos Forman’s film takes on comedian Andy Kaufman, whose refusal to honor the usual boundary between performance and life makes him a difficult subject to pin down. Jim Carrey’s committed, strange performance suits a biopic less interested in tidy explanation than in the uncertainty Kaufman cultivated.

20. Ali

Michael Mann’s film captures Muhammad Ali across a consequential stretch of his career and political life, with Will Smith embodying the boxer’s wit, confidence and force. It works best as a portrait of a public figure navigating sport, race and power, rather than as a complete account of his life.

What to know before choosing a biopic

What are the best biographical movies?

The answer depends on what you want from the form. For music and performance, start with Walk the Line, Ray or Rocketman. For political life and history, try Selma, Lincoln or Milk. For a more formally adventurous portrait, consider I, Tonya, Jackie or Oppenheimer.

Which biopic should I watch?

Choose by the experience you want, not by the subject’s fame alone: Erin Brockovich for an accessible legal drama, The Queen for a contained political portrait, or Marie Antoinette for an impressionistic period film. A biopic dramatizes a life; scenes, dialogue and compressed timelines should not be treated as a documentary record without separate verification.

How to read awards claims

Awards can help identify industry recognition, but they are not a substitute for judging a film on its own terms. The Academy Awards Database is the official record of Oscar winners and nominees and states that it is complete through the 2025 (98th) Academy Awards, presented March 15, 2026. Verify a specific film’s result by searching its title in the database rather than inferring a win or nomination from a general list.
