1992 is a six-episode Spanish thriller about a murder investigation tied to Seville’s Expo ’92 and its instantly recognizable mascot, Curro. That is an unusually vivid hook; the question is whether the series turns it into a gripping mystery or lets a familiar crime story crowd out its most distinctive idea. Netflix announced the miniseries for 13 December 2024. This review weighs the premise against the execution without treating a critical aggregate as a substitute for an individual verdict.
What is Netflix’s 1992 about?
After Amparo’s husband dies in a strange explosion, she looks for answers with Richi, a security guard and former police officer. Their investigation leads toward a series of murders in which victims are burned and a Curro doll is left beside them. Curro was the mascot of Seville’s Expo ’92, giving the crime pattern an eerie connection to a real cultural landmark.
The series is fiction, not a reconstruction of real crimes. Its Expo backdrop gives the mystery a historical and political dimension, but the central engine is a contemporary investigation. Netflix’s announcement describes the Curro-linked pattern, while its Media Center synopsis establishes Amparo and Richi’s starting point. (Netflix announcement; Netflix Media Center)
Does the Curro and Expo ’92 premise make a distinctive thriller?
Curro is more than an odd prop: a cheerful Expo mascot beside burned victims creates an immediate contrast between public celebration and private violence. Expo ’92 also offers the story a way to connect crime, memory and the unresolved legacies of a national spectacle. That is a stronger, more specific starting point than a generic hunt for a serial killer.

The premise, however, only pays off if the setting changes how the mystery unfolds—if its history, symbols and politics shape the characters’ choices and the investigation. A recognizable mascot can make a scene memorable, but it cannot by itself make a familiar crime plot feel new. The critical responses point to that tension: the hook drew notice, while some reviewers felt the series did not make enough of it.
Where the execution may lose viewers
1992 was directed by Álex de la Iglesia, who co-created it with Jorge Guerricaechevarría. Netflix credits Pablo Tébar and Jorge Valdano in the script and says the series was filmed in Madrid and Seville. The creators’ ambition was not simply to revisit the past: in a 9 December 2024 Cadena SER interview, de la Iglesia said, “Cuando estás viendo una serie, lo que quieres es que te ayude a entender el presente, no el pasado” (“When you’re watching a series, what you want is for it to help you understand the present, not the past”). That is a useful lens for the show’s political and historical backdrop, though the statement alone does not establish how successfully the series realizes it.

The broader critical picture is mixed to negative rather than unanimous. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 38% Tomatometer from eight critic reviews when checked on 4 October 2026; that is a dated snapshot, and the score and review count can change. Erick Massoto of Collider criticized the way the series saves key elements for the end without enough compelling story or sustained uncertainty along the way. Martín Fernández Cruz of La Nación described it as narratively solid but familiar, while Marta Medina Pérez of mundoCine said it failed to make the most of its original premise. Joel Keller of Decider offered a more forgiving counterpoint, calling it audacious enough—especially in its use of the cartoon rooster mascot—to be watchable. (Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1)
Those reactions capture the central trade-off: the concept supplies personality, but the reviews disagree about whether the storytelling sustains that promise. The Tomatometer is not a measure of all viewers’ responses, and it should not decide whether a viewer who likes offbeat crime premises will enjoy the series. The practical question is whether the mascot, historical setting and investigation feel integrated—or whether the hook seems more compelling than the mystery built around it.

Who made 1992?
Álex de la Iglesia directed and co-created the miniseries with Jorge Guerricaechevarría. Netflix’s announcement credits Pablo Tébar and Jorge Valdano in the script and lists Madrid and Seville as filming locations. The production’s use of Seville gives the Expo connection a geographic anchor, while the fictional crime story should remain distinct from claims about real events. (Netflix announcement)
Is 1992 worth watching?
It is most appealing if a strange, visually immediate premise is enough to get you interested in a crime thriller, and you are comfortable with the possibility that the plotting may feel more familiar than the Curro-and-Expo setup suggests. The premise is the series’ clearest point of distinction; the critical snapshot gives reason to approach the execution with measured expectations rather than assume that the hook guarantees a fresh or consistently suspenseful mystery.
