1962: Reflections of the Past is a compilation of essays about the Sino-Indian War of October and November 1962, not a single-author campaign narrative. In his introduction and review for Indian Defence Review, Claude Arpi presents it as a collection spanning battlefield accounts, military decisions, political context and the conflict’s later public memory.
What kind of book is 1962: Reflections of the Past?
The title brings together multiple contributions on the 1962 war. That matters when reading an excerpt: an argument in one essay belongs to its author and should not automatically be treated as the book’s single, unified conclusion. Arpi’s page introduces and reviews the compilation; it is not itself a substitute for the contributors’ full arguments.
Arpi frames the collection as a way to examine what went wrong as well as accounts of Indian performance. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not an independent judgment about the book’s scholarly accuracy. Read Arpi’s introduction and review at Indian Defence Review.
What subjects do the excerpts cover?
The listed essays range from strategic and political questions to specific campaigns and the legacy of the war. The contents include:

- Why Mao attacked India and decisions made during the Nehru era.
- The Indian Air Force’s non-use of combat air power.
- Tibet and the American secret war.
- Fighting at Namkha Chu, Se La, Walong and Rezang La.
- The release of Indian prisoners of war, frontier accounts and the Ladakh front.
- The Henderson-Brooks report, myths about the conflict and lessons drawn from 1962.
Arpi particularly highlights Walong and Rezang La alongside the question of combat air power. These topics signal the collection’s breadth; the excerpt-page description alone does not establish that every contributor reaches the same interpretation of the events.
How does Arpi frame the war’s memory?
Arpi places the book in the context of later public messaging about the conflict, including Chinese state and media narratives in the 2010s and 2020. Those observations describe the reviewer’s framing on the page; they should not be read as independently verified analysis of those narratives.

Arpi also writes that the war left “nearly 4,000 prisoners of war (PoWs).” This is his approximate figure in the introduction, not an independently checked official total.
