Spoilers for the Season 2 finale, “A Dream and a Memory.” The shocking death most likely meant by “1923’s latest shocking death” is Alexandra (Alex) Dutton’s. She gives birth prematurely to her and Spencer’s son, John Dutton II, then dies after refusing the amputations doctors say are needed to save her life. This is a fictional character’s death, not a report about actor Julia Schlaepfer.
What happens to Alex in the finale?
Alex’s journey back to Montana has left her gravely injured. After surviving assault, robbery, sexual violence and arrest after defending herself, she is exposed to severe cold. Spencer eventually spots her signal fire from a train, and the pair reunite. A doctor treats her frostbite, and Alex reveals that she is six months pregnant.
They are separated again: Spencer returns to the Dutton ranch, while Jacob takes Alex to a Bozeman hospital. She goes into labor before Spencer can reach her and gives birth prematurely to their son, John Dutton II. The baby survives.
The doctors tell Alex that the frostbite has caused necrosis in her legs and one hand. They recommend amputating the affected limbs to save her life. Alex refuses. After spending a night with Spencer and their newborn, she dies in her sleep with the baby on her chest.

Why does Alex refuse the operation?
The episode establishes the choice and its outcome, but it does not settle what Alex’s decision means. Actor Julia Schlaepfer has described the ending as an expression of Alex’s love and sacrifice for her family and baby. A TV Insider recap questions whether refusing treatment fits the resilient character viewers had seen. Those are interpretations, not a single definitive explanation supplied by the plot.
The episode’s medical events should likewise be understood as part of the fictional story. The available episode coverage does not establish whether the frostbite, treatment options or timing are medically or historically accurate.

Why does the death feel so shocking?
Alex and Spencer have endured a dangerous, prolonged separation, so their reunion seems to promise a future together. Instead, they have only a short time with their newborn before Alex dies. The finale pairs the child’s survival—and the continuation of the Dutton family line—with the loss of his mother.
A later time jump deepens the tragedy: according to the finale recap, Spencer lives for decades, never loves again, and eventually dies beside Alex’s grave. The episode gives the couple a brief reunion but frames Alex’s death as a loss that shapes the rest of Spencer’s life.

Who else dies or survives in the finale?
Jack dies in the preceding episode, not in the finale. The finale also kills Runs His Horse, Pete and Father Renaud. Teonna is arrested, but the report says she is freed because there are no witnesses or evidence that she killed the priest. By the end, she is considering a move to California.
Aminah Nieves, who plays Teonna, said the speed of Runs His Horse and Pete’s deaths shocked her. The finale coverage also draws a contrast between the Duttons’ ability to bury family members and Teonna’s inability to give her father and lover proper burials—a difference in the characters’ experiences, not a general historical claim.

What did the cast say about the ending?
- Schlaepfer said she suspected Alex would die, telling Brandon and Taylor, “I said it a lot to Brandon and Taylor in Season 1.” She added that she had read enough scripts and seen enough of Taylor Sheridan’s work to expect it.
- Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer, said of the finale script: “I couldn’t even read that script. I still get emotional thinking about it. It’s so beautifully written.”
- Nieves described one episode as “just a complete cluster,” and said what shocked her was the cost to Teonna and how quickly her experience was dismissed.
Where does the finale sit in the series?
“A Dream and a Memory” is the Season 2 finale. Paramount’s official 1923 page features the finale, and its press page identifies the episode by that title.
Paramount+ announced on April 16, 2025, that the finale had 14 million global viewers in its first seven days and was the series’ most-watched episode at that point. That is the platform’s reported figure, not an independently audited audience count.
