He is shot by men working for Banner after leaving his post to protect his pregnant wife, Elizabeth, and Cara. The penultimate episode also brings several other deaths, making it one of the season’s most consequential installments.
Who is killed in “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters”?
Jack Dutton is the death most likely meant by the headline. TV Insider’s March 30, 2025 recap reports that Jack abandons his assigned watch at the Dutton home to join the other cowboys and protect Elizabeth and Cara. On the road, men posing as livestock commission officers offer help; they are working for Banner, and one shoots Jack twice. The episode turns his decision to protect his family into a fatal encounter.
Actor Darren Mann, who plays Jack, described the character as naïve and trusting in comments reported by TV Insider. That is Mann’s interpretation of Jack, rather than an objective explanation supplied by the episode.
Who else dies in the episode?
Jack is not the only casualty. The episode’s deaths span the Montana storyline and Teonna’s struggle against Father Renaud, while a separate journey toward Montana ends in tragedy.
- Pete Plenty Clouds is killed in a duel with Marshal Kent. The duel also kills a horse.
- Marshal Kent is killed by Father Renaud after the duel.
- Runs His Horse is killed by Father Renaud.
- Father Renaud is killed by Teonna, who fights back.
- Paul and Hillary freeze to death in a snowstorm while trying to get the pregnant Alexandra toward Montana.
Where does the episode fall in Season 2?
Paramount Press Express lists “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters” as Season 2, Episode 6 (episode 206). It is the penultimate installment: episode 207, “A Dream and a Memory,” follows it. That sequence places the deaths just before the season’s final episode.
Where to find the series
Paramount+ lists 1923 on its official series page. Streaming availability and subscription requirements can differ by country, so check the service’s listing for your location rather than assuming the show is available everywhere.
