Spoilers for 1923 Season 1, Episode 8, “Nothing Left to Lose.” The finale makes the Duttons’ financial danger more immediate, separates Spencer and Alexandra, and leaves Teonna in peril. Those turns have emotional force, but they offer little closure after a season of buildup. Calling that a “TV curse” is an editorial metaphor, not a proven rule about season finales: here, the question is whether escalation is enough when so many storylines remain unresolved.
What happens in the 1923 Season 1 finale?
“Nothing Left to Lose,” the eighth and final episode of Season 1, was released on February 26, 2023. Paramount+’s official episode page describes the Dutton-Whitfield-Banner feud reaching a point of no return, peril for Spencer and Alexandra aboard their passenger ship, and marshals tracking Teonna. The episode pushes those three threads toward danger rather than bringing them to a settled conclusion.
In Montana, Whitfield pays the Duttons’ taxes, putting the ranch at risk. Banner is released, while Jacob and Cara face a threat that is now more concrete than a looming feud. The finale also advances Zane and Alice’s arrest storyline and brings Elizabeth’s miscarriage into the season’s emotional reckoning. These developments widen the consequences, but the ranch’s future remains hanging.
At sea, Spencer and Alexandra’s journey home is derailed by a duel. Spencer is arrested and separated from Alexandra, turning a perilous trip into a wrenching rupture. Teonna, meanwhile, finds a brief moment of closeness with her father and Pete after being found, but that respite does not end the threat around her.

The answer depends on whether a finale needs to resolve a season’s promises or make the next chapter irresistible. “Nothing Left to Lose” is effective at intensifying stakes: the ranch is exposed, the couple is split apart, and Teonna is not safe. But the central conflicts are largely carried forward. Viewers looking for payoff may find that the episode converts anticipation into another wait rather than delivering a decisive turn.
That split is visible in a small, mixed set of episode reviews—not a broad critical consensus. Amanda Whiting at New York Magazine/Vulture rated the episode 4/5 and saw it as an unexpected kick for an otherwise unhurried story. Carissa Pavlica at TV Fanatic rated it 3/5 and objected to how little ground the long episode covered, writing, “Ran for 68 minutes without making a dent in the story.” That 68-minute runtime is the figure given in Pavlica’s review excerpt, not an independently confirmed official listing.

Michael Winn Johnson’s Den of Geek review likewise argues that the finale repeats conflicts and delays justice, while singling out Teonna’s storyline and the possibilities ahead. These are individual critical responses, not evidence that finales generally suffer from a measurable “curse.” No published statistic or named study in the available material establishes such a phenomenon.
Do the cliffhangers earn the wait?
The ranch: pressure without a reckoning
Whitfield’s tax payment gives the Dutton threat an immediate mechanism: the family’s land is vulnerable. That is a stronger hook than abstract hostility, and it gives Jacob and Cara a clear problem to face. Yet the finale stops before showing what they can do about it, so the development functions more as a next-season engine than as a Season 1 resolution.
Spencer and Alexandra: the sharpest emotional break
The shipboard duel’s consequences make the separation feel sudden and costly. Spencer and Alexandra have endured danger together, so the arrest interrupts not just their journey but the future they were trying to reach. Speaking to TV Insider on February 26, 2023, Spencer actor Brandon Sklenar said, “Oh, it was heartbreaking. I got chills just reading it because they’ve been through so much together.” He also described the episode as “heavy” and a “big tonal shift.” His comments explain the emotional intent of the material; they are not a substitute for judging how much closure the episode provides.
Teonna: a respite, not safety
Teonna’s brief reunion with her father and Pete offers the finale a gentler beat amid pursuit and danger. Its intimacy matters precisely because it is temporary: being found does not mean the threat has passed. This thread gives the episode one of its clearest emotional pauses, while also leaving its central danger unresolved.

Why the “TV curse” label needs a caveat
Season finales often need to do two jobs at once: conclude a season’s dramatic movement and create momentum for what follows. The “curse” in this review’s framing is the familiar frustration that can arise when the second job overwhelms the first. It is not a formal television-industry term or a universally accepted pattern supported by a published measurement.
On that standard, “Nothing Left to Lose” comes close to the setup-heavy version of the problem. Its three main threads all end with forward motion but little resolution. The counterargument is that cliffhangers can be satisfying when they feel like meaningful escalation rather than arbitrary delay. Whiting’s more positive response reflects that possibility; Pavlica’s and Johnson’s criticisms point to the cost when viewers feel a season has deferred too much.

Paramount+ is the series’ official streaming home. Paramount’s April 16, 2025 press release said both seasons were available to stream exclusively on Paramount+ at that time; availability can vary by territory and may change, so check the official series listing for current access. A Season 1 DVD and Blu-ray release was reported for August 8, 2023, but the available evidence is secondary and does not establish present-day stock.
