Spoilers for the Season 1 finale: Spencer and Alexandra (Alex) are forced apart after Spencer kills Arthur in a duel aboard their ship. The crew puts Spencer ashore near Marseille, while Alex remains aboard because they cannot prove their marriage. As the ship leaves, she calls out that she will try to meet him in Bozeman. It is a cliffhanger about their separate journeys—not a romantic breakup.
What happens to Spencer and Alex in the 1923 Season 1 finale?
Spencer and Alex are traveling by ship toward London when Spencer spots Arthur, Alex’s angry former fiancé, among the passengers. Spencer wants to leave the dinner, but Arthur publicly insults Alex’s honor. Spencer agrees to fight him in a duel on deck and quickly gets the better of him.
Arthur then attacks Spencer with a pistol. Spencer defends himself by flipping Arthur over the ship’s guard rail and into the sea, killing him. The immediate consequence is that the crew removes Spencer from the ship.
Why are Alex and Spencer separated?
The ship’s crew puts Spencer ashore outside Marseille. Alex stays aboard because the couple cannot produce concrete proof that they are married. Their separation is imposed by the circumstances following the duel; neither chooses to end the relationship.

As Spencer is rowed away, Alex calls out that she will try to meet him in Bozeman as soon as possible. The finale does not show either person reaching Montana or establish when they will see each other again.
What the separation means for Spencer
In a TVLine interview published February 26, 2023, Spencer actor Brandon Sklenar described his character as unsure he will ever see Alex or his family again. Sklenar said Spencer knows Alex has his letters, fears she could be taken to England and kept under lock and key, and blames himself for the separation. Those are the actor’s account of Spencer’s state of mind, rather than additional events shown in the episode.

Sklenar also said the experience changes Spencer: “He’s a different man when we find him again in Part 2. Definitely.” In a February 27, 2023 interview with TheWrap, he described the couple as close to finishing the first leg of their journey before the separation creates another obstacle. He also said the boat sequence was filmed aboard the Queen Mary.
Where their journeys go after the cliffhanger
Paramount+’s official Season 2 synopsis describes Spencer undertaking an arduous journey home while Alex sets off on a trans-Atlantic journey to find him. That sets up two separate routes toward a possible reunion, but does not promise how soon—or exactly how—they will reunite.
