October 2025 brought a varied slate of new and returning shows and films across Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, HBO Max and AMC. This curated U.S.-oriented watchlist, published by Tom’s Guide on October 1, highlights 19 picks—not every release scheduled for the month. October 3: disaster, crime and drama
- The Lost Bus — Apple TV+. Paul Greengrass directs this survival film about a bus driver and a teacher trying to protect children from a wildfire.
- Monster: The Ed Gein Story — Netflix. The third season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology dramatizes the story of Ed Gein.
- Steve — Netflix. Cillian Murphy plays the head teacher of a last-chance reform school. Netflix describes the film as a reimagining of Max Porter’s novel Shy. Netflix’s fall preview also listed its October 3 release date.
October 10: an Alaska thriller and a yacht mystery
- The Last Frontier — Apple TV+. In this thriller series, an Alaska-based U.S. marshal responds to a prison transport plane crash.
- The Woman in Cabin 10 — Netflix. Keira Knightley stars as a travel journalist who believes she saw someone thrown overboard from a yacht. Netflix identifies the film as an adaptation of Ruth Ware’s bestselling novel of the same name; its fall preview corroborated the October 10 date. October 15–17: comedy, true-crime drama and documentary
- Loot, season 3 — Apple TV+, October 15. Maya Rudolph returns as billionaire Molly Wells in the comedy about the Wells Foundation.
- Murdaugh: Death in the Family — Hulu, October 15. This scripted drama is inspired by the Murdaugh Murders podcast.
- Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy — Peacock, October 16. The scripted limited series examines the Gacy case through the victims, their families and the investigators.
- The Diplomat, season 3 — Netflix, October 16. The political thriller returns amid a constitutional crisis, with Grace Penn becoming president.
- Mr. Scorsese — Apple TV+, October 17. Rebecca Miller’s five-part documentary series focuses on filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
October 22–24: psychological thrillers and a mystery series
- The Hand That Rocks the Cradle — Hulu, October 22. Michelle Garza Cervera directs this remake of the 1992 psychological thriller.
- Harlan Coben’s Lazarus — Prime Video, October 22. Joel Lazarus returns home after his father dies and becomes drawn into cold cases. Amazon’s October announcement also listed the series and its date.
- Nobody Wants This, season 2 — Netflix, October 23. The romantic comedy continues the relationship between Joanne and Noah.
- A House of Dynamite — Netflix, October 24. Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller follows U.S. officials responding to an incoming missile. Netflix’s fall preview describes the missile as launched at the United States without attribution.
October 26: crime, supernatural suspense and horror
- Mayor of Kingstown, season 4 — Paramount+. Jeremy Renner returns as Mike McLusky amid a power vacuum and gang conflict.
- Anne Rice’s Talamasca — AMC / AMC+. This supernatural spy thriller is set in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe.
- IT: Welcome to Derry — HBO Max. Stephen King’s prequel is set in Derry in 1962, with Bill Skarsgård returning as Pennywise.
October 29–30: Ibsen reimagined and a fantasy series returns
- Hedda — Prime Video, October 29. Nia DaCosta reimagines Henrik Ibsen’s play, with Tessa Thompson starring. Amazon’s October schedule also gives the October 29 date.
- The Witcher, season 4 — Netflix, October 30. Liam Hemsworth takes over as Geralt. Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri remain separated as the fantasy series returns.
How to choose from the October 2025 slate
- For documentaries: Mr. Scorsese is the explicitly identified documentary pick, presented as a five-part series.
- For scripted crime and real-case stories: consider Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Murdaugh: Death in the Family or Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy.
- For suspense: the list ranges from the yacht mystery in The Woman in Cabin 10 to the missile crisis in A House of Dynamite, with The Last Frontier and Harlan Coben’s Lazarus offering series options.
