Spoilers ahead for the ending of season one. 1899 is an eight-episode multilingual mystery thriller about passengers aboard an immigrant ship bound for New York who encounter a vessel adrift at sea. Its first season ends by revealing that the apparent voyage is part of a simulation—and the story was not renewed for the continuation its creators hoped to make.
What is 1899 about?
Created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, 1899 premiered globally on Netflix on November 17, 2022. The series follows a multinational group of passengers sailing from London to New York near the end of the nineteenth century. Their journey changes when they encounter another ship adrift at sea, and unsettling events begin to undermine what the passengers think they know. Netflix lists the first season as eight episodes and rates the series TV-MA. Netflix’s series listing and its premiere announcement provide the official premise and release details.
The ensemble’s many languages are part of the storytelling: passengers do not all share a common tongue, shaping how they communicate and interpret events. Netflix also describes the production’s use of the Volume, a soundstage surrounded by high-definition LED panels that could display the sea environment. It was a virtual-production approach rather than relying only on green screens. Netflix Tudum’s production feature discusses the technique.
The series suits viewers drawn to a slow-building ensemble mystery, period atmosphere, and questions about perception. It is less suited to someone who wants a self-contained story: the finale expands the central puzzle, and no second season followed.

What happened at the end of 1899?
Major season-one spoilers: the shipboard events are revealed to be a simulation. The apparent protagonists are aboard a spaceship in 2099, not simply on a nineteenth-century voyage. The reveal reframes the season’s mysteries rather than resolving the larger story.
In a November 24, 2022 interview, the creators discussed several symbols and details, but their comments are explanations of particular choices—not a complete answer key to every mystery. Jantje Friese said the year 1899 appealed because it sits at a threshold, a moment of transition from older beliefs toward modern thinking. She described scientific thought coming into tension with religious belief. The same interview includes her comment: “The reoccurring triangle symbol itself represents the element earth. And I don’t want to spoil the meaning of that yet.” Netflix Tudum’s ending interview contains the creator commentary.

Other clues received specific explanations from the creators: tetrahedron structures are used to construct virtual realities; Baran bo Odar called the tetrahedron “The purest geometrical form you use to create all the other forms.” Room 1011 refers to binary code, Kerberos is a computer authentication protocol, and the name Prometheus foreshadows the finale. These details add texture to the simulation reveal, but they do not settle the fate of the characters or the full design of the story.
Was 1899 cancelled, and will there be a season 2?
1899 was cancelled after its first season and has no season two. On January 2, 2023, co-creators and showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese announced: “With a heavy heart we have to tell you that ‘1899’ will not be renewed.” Their statement also said they “would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark.” TheWrap reported the announcement.

The creators’ wish describes the story they hoped to tell; it does not mean Netflix had ordered those additional seasons. The available reporting does not establish Netflix’s underlying reason for ending the series, so claims about audience numbers, completion rates, costs, or a particular performance threshold should not be treated as confirmed explanations.
