Eminem’s career has moved from a second-place finish at a Los Angeles rap competition to Grammy-winning albums, an Oscar-winning song, a Super Bowl halftime show and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “Iconic” is a judgment, not an official ranking, so this selection follows documented milestones across his career rather than claiming to be definitive.

Early breakthrough: from Detroit battle rapper to major-label artist

1. Second place at the 1997 Rap Olympics

Eminem’s breakthrough story began at the 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, where he placed second. The Recording Academy says an Interscope staff member discovered him there. Jimmy Iovine later played Eminem’s debut EP for Dr. Dre, who responded, “Find him. Now.” The episode connects a live competition to the record-industry partnership that would shape the next phase of his career. Recording Academy artist profile

2. The Slim Shady LP brings him to a national audience

In 1999, The Slim Shady LP became Eminem’s major-label debut and entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2, according to the Recording Academy. “My Name Is,” one of the album’s defining tracks, introduced a sharply comic and provocative persona to a much wider audience. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame includes the song in its career profile. Recording Academy artist profile · Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile

3. His first Grammy wins

At the 42nd Grammy Awards, Eminem won Best Rap Solo Performance for “My Name Is” and Best Rap Album for The Slim Shady LP. The two awards recognized both a hit song and the album that established his major-label career. The Recording Academy currently lists 15 Grammy wins and 47 nominations for Eminem; those totals were reviewed in October 2026 and can change. Recording Academy artist profile

The Marshall Mathers LP makes the impact unmistakable

4. “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan” define a new era

The Marshall Mathers LP arrived in 2000, pairing the irreverent “The Real Slim Shady” with “Stan,” a dark narrative song that became one of Eminem’s most widely recognized tracks. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame highlights both in its career profile. The Recording Academy records that the album won Best Rap Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards and was also nominated for Album of the Year. 5. Elton John joins him for “Stan” at the Grammys

At the 43rd Grammy Awards, Eminem performed “Stan” with Elton John. It was Eminem’s first Grammy performance, according to the Recording Academy. The duet placed a song from The Marshall Mathers LP on one of music’s most prominent award-show stages, with a guest whose presence made the performance distinct from a conventional solo appearance. 6. “Without Me” turns the spotlight back on Eminem

“Without Me,” from 2002’s The Eminem Show, became one of the era’s signature tracks. The Recording Academy lists its 2003 wins for Best Male Rap Solo Performance and Best Short Form Music Video. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame also includes the song in its career timeline. Recording Academy artist profile · Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile

7. 8 Mile makes him a leading man

The 2002 film 8 Mile gave Eminem a starring role and brought his music to a film audience. The Recording Academy describes it as semiautobiographical: its story draws on aspects of his background, but it is not a literal account of his life. Its soundtrack supplied “Lose Yourself,” making the film and song a major crossover moment in his career. Recording Academy retrospective on “Lose Yourself”

8. “Lose Yourself” reaches No. 1 on the Hot 100

Released in October 2002, “Lose Yourself” became Eminem’s first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to the Recording Academy. Its achievement gave the 8 Mile soundtrack song a chart milestone of its own, separate from the film’s success. Recording Academy retrospective on “Lose Yourself”

9. He writes and records it while making the film

The song’s creation is unusual because it was tied so closely to production of 8 Mile. The Recording Academy retrospective says Eminem wrote “Lose Yourself” on the set between takes and recorded it in a mobile studio set up in a spare trailer. The account links the song’s urgency to the circumstances in which he made it, rather than treating it as a separate studio project conceived after the film. 10. “Lose Yourself” wins the Academy Award for Best Original Song

“Lose Yourself” won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. The Recording Academy describes it as the first rap song to win that category, a landmark for rap at the Oscars as well as for Eminem. This was the 2003 Academy Award recognition for the song, distinct from its Grammy wins. Recording Academy retrospective on “Lose Yourself”

11. Grammy recognition adds two more major wins for the song

At the 46th Grammy Awards, “Lose Yourself” received five nominations and won Best Male Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song, according to the Recording Academy retrospective. These Grammy awards recognized the recording and songwriting in separate categories; they were not the Academy Award won the previous year. Recording Academy retrospective on “Lose Yourself”

Reinvention, catalog longevity and later chart milestones

12. Recovery marks a return-era hit

“Love the Way You Lie,” Eminem’s 2010 collaboration with Rihanna from Recovery, is one of the album’s notable tracks in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile. Interscope says Recovery was the first album in the United States certified platinum digitally. That distinction is specific to digital certification in the U.S.; it is not a claim about the first platinum album in every format or market. At the 57th Grammy Awards, The Marshall Mathers LP2 won Best Rap Album, while “The Monster,” Eminem’s collaboration with Rihanna, won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. 14. Curtain Call: The Hits reaches a decade on the Billboard 200

Interscope says Curtain Call: The Hits became the first hip-hop album to spend a full decade on the Billboard 200 in March 2021. The label presents this as a chart milestone; its page does not show the underlying chart methodology. The staying power of a hits collection is a different measure of career impact from a new album debut or single peak. Interscope artist page

15. Music to Be Murdered By extends a No. 1 album streak

Released January 17, 2020, Music to Be Murdered By was Eminem’s ninth consecutive studio album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, according to Interscope. 2022: a stadium-scale performance and Hall of Fame induction

17. Eminem joins the Super Bowl LVI halftime show

On February 13, 2022, Eminem performed at Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. 18. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducts him

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Eminem in the Performer category in 2022, with Dr. Dre as his inducer. The Hall’s profile records an induction medley that included “My Name Is” and performances of songs with Steven Tyler and Ed Sheeran. The moment formalized his place in an institution whose recognition extends beyond any single album, hit or chart record. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile

How the milestones fit together

These moments trace a career through distinct kinds of recognition: a competition that led to a record deal, a major-label debut, Grammy wins, a film crossover, an Oscar-winning song, sustained catalog chart presence, international chart leadership and institutional honors. For a sense of scale, Interscope reports 130 million albums and 389 million singles sold worldwide, and says Eminem sold 32.2 million albums in the United States in the 2000s, making him Nielsen SoundScan’s top-selling artist of that decade in the country. Those are label-reported figures; the page does not state a measurement cutoff or methodology. Interscope artist page

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame profile quotes Dr. Dre calling Eminem “the best MC ever,” and, in a passage by RJ Smith, quotes Greg Tate: “Eminem expanded what a voice at the mic could say.” These are critical assessments, not chart statistics, and help explain why his career is remembered not only for awards and records but also for his impact on rap performance and expression.
