For intimate family drama, start with The Twilight Samurai; for a long, ensemble sword-fight epic, choose 13 Assassins. This ranked list spans both, along with animated, manga-based, Hollywood and genre-bending films. Its order follows one critic’s selection, not a settled consensus.

What counts as a samurai movie?

Samurai films, often called chanbara, are commonly treated as a strand of jidaigeki, or Japanese period drama. Their central characters are often samurai or rōnin, and sword fighting is a frequent feature. Those are useful guideposts, not an exclusive rule: films can qualify while focusing more on family life, politics or moral conflict than on combat. One curated list, for example, requires a runtime over 40 minutes and a festival, theatrical or professional streaming release, while excluding television films and series. Letterboxd’s official samurai-movie list sets out those criteria.

The 18 best samurai movies of the 21st century

The ranking below reproduces Toxigon’s subjective list, published April 15, 2025. It includes Japanese productions as well as Hollywood interpretations, and should be read as one editorial ranking rather than a universal verdict. Toxigon’s list is the source for its order and descriptions.

  1. The Twilight Samurai (2002), directed by Yōji Yamada

A poor, low-ranking samurai divides his days between clerical work and caring for his family, while an old love returns to his life. This is a restrained domestic drama and romance, not an action-first choice.

  2. The Last Samurai (2003), directed by Edward Zwick

  3. Sword of the Stranger (2007), animated

A wandering swordsman is drawn into protecting a child in this animated adventure. Japan submitted the film for the animated-feature category at the 81st Academy Awards.

  4. Love and Honor (2006), directed by Yōji Yamada

A low-ranking samurai loses his sight, and the story turns toward his wife and their shared struggle. It is a personal drama shaped by disability, love and obligation.

  5. The Hidden Blade (2004), directed by Yōji Yamada

A lower-ranking samurai is caught between love and duty when a mission involving a friend draws him into conflict. Its intimate scale makes it a natural companion to Yamada’s other period dramas.

  6. 13 Assassins (2010), directed by Takashi Miike

A group of samurai and a hunter undertake a perilous mission against a corrupt lord. Miike remakes Eiichi Kudo’s 1963 film, building toward an extended ensemble action story.

  7. Zatoichi (2003), directed by Takeshi Kitano

Kitano writes, directs and stars in this stylish take on the blind swordsman. It balances a recognizable chanbara premise with the filmmaker’s own distinctive approach.

  12. Sword of Desperation (2010), directed by Hideyuki Hirayama

Imprisoned after killing a lord’s wife, a samurai is assigned to guard the lord. Conspiracy and the limits of his agency drive this more constrained political story.
