There is no single, fair way to rank every game show by longevity: daytime network, prime-time network and first-run syndication have different records, and revivals complicate the count. This U.S.-focused list orders programs by the calendar span from their first documented premiere through 2026, counting a revival as part of a show’s history but not implying an uninterrupted run. For each title, the premiere date is the starting point; interruptions and later editions are noted where established. The available sources do not provide comparable, dated episode totals for all 17.

How this list measures longevity

The ranking uses years since a program’s first documented U.S. television premiere, rather than consecutive years in production, season count or total episodes. A show with several separate runs can therefore appear alongside one that stayed on the air more continuously. Where the current edition began later than the franchise, both dates are identified. Network daytime, network prime time and syndication are distinct categories; a record claim in one category is not a universal title.

Premiere years and interruptions are included only where the cited sources establish them. Several entries below are historical touchstones or have returned in later editions; this selection does not claim that all 17 are currently airing.

The 17 longest-running game shows

  1. The Price Is Right — 1956 (franchise); 1972 (current CBS edition)

The show has two legitimate starting points. PBS dates the original television debut to 1956 and describes the franchise as the longest-running daytime game show in North American television history (PBS). The present CBS program began in 1972; CBS calls it “the longest-running game show in television history” (CBS). Those claims use different scopes, so the 1956 franchise date should not be mistaken for the start of the current CBS edition.

  2. What’s My Line? — 1950

Premiering February 2, 1950, this panel game asked guests to identify a contestant’s occupation through yes-or-no questions. The Television Academy calls it “the longest-running game show in the history of prime time network television”—a category-specific distinction, not a comparison with every daytime or syndicated program (Television Academy).

  3. To Tell the Truth — 1956

The original series began in 1956. Its history includes distinct runs in 1956–1978, 1980–1981 and 2000–2002, followed by an edition beginning in 2016. These spans are listed in a June 2023 Family Feud article, which is a dated historical reference rather than confirmation of the program’s status in 2026 (Family Feud official site).

  4. Jeopardy! — 1964

The original program debuted March 30, 1964. Its long history includes different editions and production eras, so the franchise premiere is not by itself proof of continuous production. The Television Academy marks the date in its history of the show (Television Academy).

  5. Match Game — 1962

Match Game began in 1962 and became a durable example of the celebrity-panel format, in which contestants matched answers with a panel’s responses. PBS’s overview of television game shows places it among the genre’s notable programs (PBS). Its later editions are revivals, not one uninterrupted run.

  6. Hollywood Squares — 1966

First airing in 1966, the show turned a grid of celebrity guests into a giant tic-tac-toe board. Its premise made the celebrity panel part of the gameplay rather than merely a source of clues. PBS includes it among the genre’s lasting television examples (PBS).

  7. Family Feud — 1976

Family Feud premiered July 12, 1976. Two families try to name the answers given by a survey of 100 people. The official history records Richard Dawson’s 1976–85 period and his return in 1994–95, illustrating that the franchise’s longevity includes breaks and changes in edition (Family Feud official site). Its official 2026 anniversary framing marks 50 years since the premiere, not 50 years of uninterrupted production.

  8. Wheel of Fortune — 1975

The program premiered in 1975, while its syndicated version began in fall 1983. The Television Academy identifies the syndicated edition as “the longest-running syndicated game show in United States television history,” keeping the record attached to its category (Television Academy; Television Academy). The Academy page reports “over 5,000 episodes” but does not date that figure, so it should not be treated as a current exact total.

  9. Let’s Make a Deal — 1963

The original show launched in 1963, built around contestants making deals and choosing among prizes, cash and concealed possibilities. PBS’s historical treatment includes the program among television game-show standouts (PBS). The franchise’s original premiere and any later edition should be kept distinct when discussing its production continuity.

  10. Beat the Clock — 1950

Beginning in 1950, this stunt-based competition challenged contestants to complete timed physical tasks. It represents a different branch of game-show history from quiz and word puzzles: the spectacle came from whether a player could finish a task before the clock ran out.

  11. The Dating Game — 1965

The dating competition began in 1965, asking a contestant to choose among unseen potential dates based on their answers to questions. It helped establish a format that later returned in new editions, but a revival does not make the original run continuous.

  12. Concentration — 1958

First broadcast in 1958, Concentration combined a memory game with a rebus puzzle. Contestants revealed pieces of a board by matching concealed pairs, then solved the visual phrase. The format has had multiple incarnations over time.

  13. What’s This Song? / Name That Tune — 1952

The musical quiz first appeared in 1952. Contestants identified songs from brief musical clues, a simple premise that supported later versions and revivals. The title has appeared in different forms across its history, so the start date describes the format’s television lineage, not one continuous edition.

  14. Truth or Consequences — 1950

The program’s television history began in 1950, adapting a radio format that mixed quiz questions with comic stunts and consequences for wrong answers. Its blend of audience participation and performance made it distinct from conventional knowledge quizzes.

  15. Sale of the Century — 1969

The original U.S. version premiered in 1969, giving contestants chances to answer questions and win prizes through a shopping-oriented format. Later versions and international adaptations should not be conflated with the first U.S. run.

  16. The Newlywed Game — 1966

Beginning in 1966, the show tested how well married couples knew each other by comparing their answers to personal questions. The familiar format returned in later editions, making the franchise’s lifespan longer than any single production run.

  17. Hollywood Squares (revival editions) and other returning formats

Long-lived game-show histories often comprise a first run and later revivals rather than uninterrupted production. The Strong National Museum of Play’s account of television game shows identifies enduring formats including Jeopardy!, Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune and The Price Is Right (The Strong National Museum of Play). This final entry highlights the broader pattern rather than claiming a separate title or a precise, independently verified premiere span.

Why the record depends on the category

Asking which show is “the longest-running” without defining the measure produces conflicting answers. The Price Is Right has a 1956 franchise lineage and a current CBS edition that began in 1972; What’s My Line? holds the Television Academy’s prime-time network distinction; and the Television Academy applies its syndicated-game-show record to the syndicated Wheel of Fortune edition. Those are not interchangeable records.

Episode totals have the same problem: they need a version and an “as of” date. CBS lists episodes from Season 55 dated October 1 and 2, 2026, for the current Price Is Right edition (CBS). That is evidence of current-season listings, not a comparable lifetime episode count across programs.
