There is no objective winner for the year’s best movie performance. This curated, unranked selection brings together lead and supporting roles that stand out for their emotional precision, comic timing, character work, or ensemble chemistry. It draws on performance-specific choices from TIME film critic Stephanie Zacharek alongside recognition from the National Society of Film Critics (NSFC) and other critics’ groups; awards are context, not a substitute for judgment.

17 standout movie performances from 2025

The list is not ranked. It includes drama and comedy, individual turns and collaborative work, and performances recognized in different ways. Some descriptions reflect the reasons TIME highlighted its selections; for other picks, the cited distinction is critics’ recognition rather than a claim that every organization agreed.

  1. Kirsten Dunst in Roofman

Dunst gives Leigh a guarded openness that makes her emotional complexity legible. TIME praised how she conveys a woman falling for someone whose criminal past he has concealed.

  2. Delroy Lindo in Sinners

As Delta Slim, a blues pianist and harmonica player, Lindo brings quiet authority to a character who carries cultural memory. TIME singled out the performance, and the NSFC named Lindo a Supporting Actor runner-up.

  3. Jennifer Lawrence in Die My Love

Lawrence’s portrayal of Grace, a new mother experiencing postpartum depression, is volatile and sometimes funny. The humor and instability sit side by side, rather than reducing the character to a single emotional register.

  4. Joel Edgerton in Train Dreams

Edgerton plays Idaho logger Robert Grainier with restrained grief. The performance makes a life shaped by work, family, and tragedy feel intimate without overstatement.

  5. Zoey Deutch in Nouvelle Vague

Deutch balances Jean Seberg’s thoughtful gravity with a casual impulsiveness. The tension between those qualities gives the portrayal its liveliness.

  6. Paul Mescal in Hamnet

Mescal’s Shakespeare is defined in part by what he holds back. TIME highlighted the restraint in his portrayal of grief, a choice that lets silence carry emotional weight.

  7. Rebecca Hall in Peter Hujar’s Day

Hall plays Linda Rosenkrantz in an interview-centered film, and her attentive listening becomes the performance’s central craft. TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek wrote: “There were showier performances this year, but few better ones.”

  8. Channing Tatum in Roofman

Tatum’s comic portrayal of Jeffrey is shaped by yearning and by his effort to build a second family. That emotional need gives the comedy more than a punchline-driven rhythm.

  9. Keke Palmer and SZA in One of Them Days

This is a joint selection: Palmer and SZA’s roommates work as a comic team. TIME emphasized their banter and timing, where the exchange between performers matters as much as either individual turn.

  10. Ethan Hawke in Blue Moon

Hawke portrays lyricist Lorenz Hart in a performance selected by TIME and named Best Actor by the NSFC. The award is a specific critics’ vote, not a universal measure of the year’s acting.

  11. Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You

Byrne was the NSFC’s Best Actress runner-up. That recognition places her among the year’s notable performances for this list; it does not, on its own, establish a more detailed critical consensus about the role.

  12. Renate Reinsve in Sentimental Value

Reinsve was an NSFC Best Actress runner-up, and the Cannes festival’s roundup records her European Film Award for Best Actress. The distinctions come from separate organizations and should be read as separate forms of recognition.

  13. Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another

Taylor won the NSFC Supporting Actress vote. That category win makes her one of the year’s clearest supporting-performance standouts in this particular critics’ awards tally.

  14. Benicio del Toro in One Battle After Another

Del Toro won the NSFC Supporting Actor vote for his work in the film, adding a category-winning supporting performance to the list.

  15. Wagner Moura in The Secret Agent

Moura was an NSFC Best Actor runner-up. The Cannes roundup also records his New York Film Critics Circle Best Actor win and Golden Globe win for drama actor, showing recognition across several organizations and categories.

  16. Michael B. Jordan in Sinners

Jordan was an NSFC Best Actor runner-up. TIME notes that he plays twins Smoke and Stack, making the differentiation between two characters a notable part of the performance’s scope.

  17. Stellan Skarsgård in Sentimental Value

Skarsgård was an NSFC Supporting Actor runner-up. The Cannes roundup also records a shared Los Angeles Film Critics Association Best Actor award and a European Film Award for Best Actor; these are distinct honors, not one combined award.

What makes the list varied

The selections are useful to compare along several dimensions, rather than to treat as a single ladder of merit.

  • Lead and supporting work: the list includes both, and awards categories offer one way—but not the only way—to distinguish them.
  • Restraint and comic timing: Mescal, Edgerton, and Hall are recognized here for controlled, attentive work, while Tatum, Palmer, and SZA illustrate performance driven by comedy and timing.
  • Individual turns and chemistry: Jordan’s twin roles present a single actor differentiating two characters; Palmer and SZA’s selection depends on the interplay of a pair.
  • Different kinds of recognition: TIME’s critic-selected performances and NSFC winners and runners-up overlap only in part. One is an individual critic’s list; the other is the result of a critics’ society vote.

How to read “best” in a year-end list

“Best” here means a considered editorial selection, not an objective ranking or a claim of universal agreement. TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek’s 2025 list directly supports ten entries, including the jointly credited Palmer and SZA performance. The additional selections are supported by NSFC results and, for several performers, awards recorded in the Cannes roundup. These sources offer different kinds of evidence: a critic’s explanation of a performance, a category result, or recognition from another organization.

Film-review aggregates answer a different question. Metacritic’s “The 30 Best Movies of 2025” ranks films by Metascore and requires at least seven professional reviews for inclusion. It is not an acting-performance ranking, so a film’s position there cannot establish where an actor belongs on a list like this.

Sources and scope

Release calendars vary by territory, particularly for international films. This selection uses the cited sources’ 2025 framing rather than asserting a single worldwide release-date rule.
