Television has a habit of making characters disappear without giving viewers a proper goodbye. Sometimes an actor leaves for another project. Sometimes a replacement proves more popular. Sometimes a character is simply removed from the show and never mentioned again.
The phenomenon is commonly called Chuck Cunningham syndrome, after Richie Cunningham’s older brother on Happy Days. But not every example is equally mysterious. Some exits were explained, while others were later contradicted by the show itself.
These 15 characters range from one-season regulars to members of apparently permanent TV families. Their absences became noticeable because the characters had already been established—and, in several cases, had been treated as if they had never existed.
What counts as a forgotten TV character?
This list focuses on characters who disappeared, were quietly replaced, or were later overwritten by their own shows. It does not include characters who received a clear death scene or a conventional farewell. A few entries do have an explanation outside the story, such as an actor accepting another role, but the series itself gave viewers little closure.

1. Chuck Cunningham — Happy Days
Chuck was Richie and Joanie Cunningham’s older brother, making him part of the central family in the show’s first season. Gavan O’Herlihy played him in Season 1, and Randolph Roberts took over for his final appearance in the Season 2 premiere.
That episode established that Chuck had gone to college. After that, however, he was never seen or discussed again. His disappearance became even more conspicuous in Season 11, during Joanie’s wedding, when Howard Cunningham referred to “both” of his children as married. Chuck had apparently been removed not only from the household, but from the family’s remembered history.
His name eventually became television shorthand for an unexplained disappearance: Chuck Cunningham syndrome.
2. Judy Winslow — Family Matters
Judy was Carl and Harriette Winslow’s youngest daughter and was initially a regular part of the family. Her final identifiable appearance came in the Season 4 episode “Mama’s Wedding,” during Estelle Winslow’s wedding.

The series did not provide a departure, relocation, death, or custody explanation. The frequently repeated claim that she was last seen walking upstairs is inaccurate; her final scenes were in “Mama’s Wedding.” The Winslow family then continued as though Judy had never been part of it.
3. Tori Scott — Saved by the Bell
Leanna Creel played Tori Scott, a tough new student introduced during the show’s final season. Tori arrived while Tiffani Thiessen and Elizabeth Berkley were appearing in fewer episodes, and she became part of the central group. She even dated Zack Morris.
Her place in the show was short-lived. When Kelly and Jessie returned for the graduation finale, Tori was absent from the group. The 2020 revival later turned the continuity problem into a joke: Zack mentioned Tori, while Kelly acted as though she did not remember her.
Tori was not a minor background student who appeared once. She had been integrated into the final-season cast, only to be missing when the original series reached its farewell.

Mark Brendanawicz, played by Paul Schneider, was a major presence during the first two seasons of Parks and Recreation. He worked as a Pawnee city planner, became an early romantic interest for Leslie Knope, and dated Ann Perkins.
Mark’s exit was more clearly explained than most entries on this list. At the end of Season 2, he left for a new job. He was not killed off, and the story did not imply that anything tragic had happened to him.
What made him easy to forget was the show’s rapid expansion after his departure. Ben Wyatt and Chris Traeger brought new energy to the ensemble, while Mark was rarely mentioned again. His disappearance was a production and story decision, not a mystery within the plot.

5. Ben Geller — Friends
Ben was Ross Geller’s son. He first appeared as a baby in Season 1 and later became a recurring character played by Cole Sprouse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter Rachel gave birth to Emma, Ben effectively disappeared from Friends. The omission was particularly awkward because a later line treated Emma as Ross’s father’s first grandchild, despite Ben already being part of the family.
The series never explained that Ben had died, moved away, or been removed from Ross’s life through a custody ruling. He simply stopped appearing, even though the show continued to develop Ross as a father.
6. Tina Pinciotti — That ’70s Show
Tina was Donna Pinciotti’s younger sister and appeared in the Season 1 episode “Eric’s Burger Job.” That single appearance suggested the character might have a larger role in the Pinciotti family, but Tina never returned.
The show later went further than merely forgetting her. In Season 7, Kitty referred to Donna as Bob and Midge Pinciotti’s only child. That line contradicted Tina’s existence and effectively rewrote the family history.

Tina is therefore different from a recurring character who gradually faded away. Her entire on-screen run consisted of one episode, followed years later by a statement that treated Donna as an only child.
7. Coco — The Golden Girls
Coco was the live-in housekeeper in the original Golden Girls pilot. Charles Levin played him, and the character had been conceived as a gay member of the main ensemble.
During the development of the series, Estelle Getty’s Sophia—initially expected to be a recurring character—proved so effective that she was promoted to the regular cast. Coco was removed after the pilot and never appeared in the series proper.
That makes him a pilot casualty rather than a mid-series disappearance. Viewers who know the familiar quartet of Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia may not realize that the original household was designed to include a fifth principal character.

8. Mandy Hampton — The West Wing
Mandy Hampton, played by Moira Kelly, was a media consultant and Josh Lyman’s former romantic partner. She was prominent throughout much of the first season, but her appearances became less frequent before she disappeared by Season 2.
Mandy did not receive a major farewell episode or a substantial later explanation. Series creator Aaron Sorkin later said that Kelly was a talented actor, but that the show and the character were not the right fit.

Her absence was especially noticeable because the first season had positioned Mandy as an important member of the political team. Once she was gone, The West Wing moved on without building a significant story around her departure.
9. Dr. Katherine Pulaski — Star Trek: The Next Generation
Dr. Katherine Pulaski, played by Diana Muldaur, replaced Dr. Beverly Crusher as the Enterprise’s chief medical officer during Season 2. Pulaski brought a different personality and professional relationship to the crew, but her tenure lasted only one season.
Crusher returned in Season 3, and Pulaski was barely mentioned afterward. Executive producer Rick Berman later acknowledged that the character “never really quite solidified” within the series.
Pulaski was not a permanent replacement who was gradually pushed into the background. She was the chief medical officer for one season, then the previous doctor returned and the show largely treated the interruption as finished.
10. Richie Iannucci — The King of Queens
Richie was one of Doug Heffernan’s oldest friends. He had attended high school with Doug and had shared an apartment with him before Doug married Carrie.
Richie disappeared at the beginning of Season 3 after actor Larry Romano accepted a larger role on the NBC sitcom Kristin. The series did not give him a substantial departure storyline, despite having established him as a close, longtime friend rather than a one-episode acquaintance.
Later episodes focused on Doug’s other relationships and comic conflicts, leaving Richie’s absence to blend into the background. There was no major explanation for why an old friend had suddenly stopped appearing.
11. Seven — Married… with Children
Seven was introduced in Season 7 as a young boy left in Al and Peggy Bundy’s care by Peggy’s cousins. He represented a familiar sitcom experiment: adding a cute child to refresh an established family comedy.
The experiment did not last. Seven vanished without a serious canonical explanation, and Season 8 acknowledged the disappearance with a joke that placed his face on a milk carton.
The milk-carton gag is one of television’s clearest examples of a show admitting that it has abandoned a character. It did not explain where Seven went; it turned the lack of an explanation into part of the joke.

When Step by Step moved from ABC to CBS for Season 7, Brendan did not move with it. The series became more confusing by continuing to refer to Frank and Carol as having seven children, even though Brendan was no longer present.
There was no clearly stated move, death, custody change, or other story event to account for the missing child. Brendan remained part of the family’s numerical description while disappearing from its actual scenes.
13. Amy Jessup — Fringe
Amy Jessup was a junior FBI agent introduced in the Season 2 premiere. Meghan Markle played her in two episodes, and the character initially appeared to be positioned for a continuing role in the show’s investigative world.
That continuation never happened. Jessup did not become a regular member of the Fringe team and was never seen again after those two episodes.
The character is now particularly easy to remember only in retrospect because the role belongs to Markle’s pre-Suits television work. At the time, however, Jessup was simply another promising supporting character who vanished before her potential could be developed.

Captain Oliver Jones was a Black neurosurgeon played by Timothy Brown. He appeared in the early portion of M*A*S*H and was dropped after six episodes.
The reasons for his removal remain disputed. Accounts have cited concerns about the character’s nickname, budget limitations, and the incorrect belief that Black surgeons had not served in Korean War MASH units. These should be treated as competing explanations rather than a single definitively documented cause.

The historical claim itself has also been challenged. It is therefore misleading to say as settled fact that the show removed Jones because there were no Black surgeons in Korea. What is clear is that the character was established early, appeared in six episodes, and then disappeared.
15. Lana Shields — Three’s Company
Lana Shields, played by Ann Wedgeworth, was introduced in Season 4 as a lustful divorcée who pursued Jack Tripper. The character was prominent enough to be added to the opening credits.
Her pursuit-based storyline quickly wore out its welcome, and Lana disappeared before the season ended. She received no substantial farewell and no later explanation for her absence.
Lana is easy to misremember as a guest character because her run was so brief. In reality, she had been promoted into the credited ensemble, making her disappearance more conspicuous than that of a typical one-episode visitor.

Why do TV characters disappear?
There is no single reason. Characters can be removed when actors accept other jobs, when a new ensemble direction makes an existing role unnecessary, or when a pilot concept is revised before the regular series begins. Sometimes a storyline simply fails to connect with viewers or writers.
What distinguishes these cases is the gap between the character’s established place in the show and the way the series handles the exit. Mark Brendanawicz’s job change is a straightforward example of a written departure. Ben Geller, Judy Winslow, and Brendan Lambert represent the opposite: characters whose absence was never properly addressed.
The most striking cases are the ones later contradicted by the show itself. Tina is omitted from Donna’s family history. Chuck is ignored in a later Cunningham family reference. Step by Step continues to describe a seven-child family without Brendan on screen. Those moments turn an ordinary casting or writing decision into a continuity error viewers can still spot decades later.
FAQ
What is Chuck Cunningham syndrome?
Chuck Cunningham syndrome is the term used for a TV character who disappears without an adequate in-story explanation. The name comes from Chuck Cunningham on Happy Days, who was recast for one appearance and then never seen or mentioned again.
Which character on this list disappeared most completely?
Judy Winslow from Family Matters is one of the clearest examples. She was part of the Winslow family, appeared in Season 4’s “Mama’s Wedding,” and then vanished without a canonical explanation.
Was Mark Brendanawicz killed off on Parks and Recreation?
No. Mark left Pawnee for a new job at the end of Season 2. The series simply gave him little attention after his departure.
Why did Dr. Pulaski leave Star Trek: The Next Generation?
Dr. Beverly Crusher returned as the Enterprise’s chief medical officer in Season 3 after Pulaski’s one-season tenure. Executive producer Rick Berman later said that Pulaski never fully solidified within the series.
Did Seven from Married… with Children receive an official explanation?
No serious explanation was provided. The show later joked about his disappearance by showing his face on a milk carton.

Forgotten TV characters are not always victims of a mystery. Some were written out for practical reasons, some belonged to abandoned creative ideas, and others were simply crowded out by a stronger ensemble. The enduring oddity is that many shows never bother to close the door behind them.
That is why characters such as Chuck Cunningham, Judy Winslow, Ben Geller, and Brendan Lambert remain memorable despite their limited screen time: their shows established them as part of a world, then carried on as if they had never been there.
