Alan Rickman was already an accomplished stage actor before film audiences met him as Hans Gruber in Die Hard. His path to that role ran through graphic design, late-entry drama training and years on stage; later, he directed, kept detailed diaries and played Severus Snape across all eight Harry Potter films. These 15 details trace that career and his life, including what is publicly established about his death.
Before film fame, Rickman trained as a designer and actor
1. He began in graphic design
Rickman studied art and graphic design at Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Before turning to acting, he ran a design studio with friends. His visual training also surfaced later in the sketches and calligraphy in his diaries. (Alan Rickman Professorship biography)
2. He entered drama school at 26
Rather than follow the route of a child performer or drama-school graduate in his teens, Rickman entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) at 26. He studied there from 1972 to 1974. (The Guardian obituary)
His stage career came before his screen breakthrough
3. Valmont made him a major stage presence
Rickman’s breakthrough came as the aristocratic seducer Valmont in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1985 production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The production transferred to Broadway, and Rickman received a Tony nomination for the role. (The Guardian obituary; Television Academy biography)

4. Hans Gruber was his first major film role at 42
Rickman was 42 when he made his major film debut as Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988), after building substantial theatre experience. The role made him famous on screen, but it was not the start of his acting career. (The Guardian obituary)
5. The villain image was only one part of his screen work
Alongside memorable antagonists, Rickman played Jamie, a tender and unsettled romantic lead in Truly, Madly, Deeply; Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility; and Harry in Love Actually. The contrast shows why reducing his work to a single villain persona misses much of his range. (Alan Rickman Professorship biography; Television Academy biography)

6. He directed films as well as acting in them
Rickman directed the film The Winter Guest (1997) and later A Little Chaos (2014). He also directed theatre, working behind the scenes as well as performing. (The Guardian obituary; Television Academy biography)
7. Theatre remained part of his career after screen success
Film work did not end Rickman’s connection to the stage. He returned in productions including Noël Coward’s Private Lives, Ibsen’s John Gabriel Borkman and Theresa Rebeck’s Seminar. (The Guardian obituary; Television Academy biography)

8. He began keeping a pocket diary in 1972
Rickman kept a pocket diary from 1972 and later wrote fuller daily accounts. Editor Alan Taylor described the archive as 26 volumes, some illustrated. The diaries document work and everyday life, rather than serving only as a record of his famous roles. (The Guardian, on the diaries)
9. His design background remained visible on the page
The diaries included sketches and calligraphy, details that connect his later writing practice with his early education and work in graphic design. (Alan Rickman Professorship biography)
Playing Snape became a decade-long commitment
10. He played Snape in all eight films
Rickman portrayed Severus Snape throughout the eight Harry Potter films, spanning 2001–2011. The length of that commitment meant the character remained part of his screen career for roughly a decade. (Television Academy biography)
11. His diary records ambivalence after accepting
A diary entry reported in 2022 says that Rickman called in August 2000 to accept the part, then wrote the following day that he felt ambivalent. That is a diary-recorded reaction at a particular moment, not evidence that he remained opposed to the role throughout the series. (The Guardian, on the diaries)

12. By 2015, he said he did not regret the films
In a BAFTA interview, Rickman rejected the idea that he regretted spending ten years on the films. He recalled going to a bookshop with the parents of a friend’s Harry Potter-obsessed daughter, who cared about the book rather than who played Snape. The anecdote captures a distinction between the actor’s fame and the readers’ attachment to the story. (BAFTA interview transcript, 15 April 2015)
