By GOBankingRates’ June 22, 2025 estimates, T’Challa—Black Panther—is the richest fictional character on its list, at $90 trillion. Scrooge McDuck follows at $65.4 billion and Smaug at $54.1 billion. These are one publication’s estimates, not a definitive ranking: the totals depend on what counts as personal wealth, and older lists produced very different leaders.

The 15 richest fictional characters on GOBankingRates’ 2025 list

The amounts below are the estimates published by GOBankingRates on June 22, 2025. They are not independently audited net worths, and the article does not establish one uniform calculation method for all 15 characters. Some estimates center on a company or inherited fortune; others depend on treasure, real estate, or resources associated with a nation. Read GOBankingRates’ full 2025 ranking and explanations.

  1. T’Challa / Black Panther — $90 trillion. GOBankingRates ties this estimate to Wakanda’s vibranium reserves. The same article notes estimates as low as $500 billion for Black Panther’s personal wealth, a striking difference that turns on whether national resources are counted as his own.
  2. Scrooge McDuck — $65.4 billion. The estimate reflects a fortune built through mines and mills, famously kept in his money bin.
  3. Smaug — $54.1 billion. The dragon’s estimated wealth comes from the gold, silver, jewels, and Arkenstone in his hoard. Smaug is the dragon in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
  4. Tony Stark — $43.4 billion. GOBankingRates points to Stark Industries, inventions, investments, and property, and assigns $7 billion of the estimate to the Iron Man suits.
  5. Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks — $36.2 billion. His fortune is linked to Warbucks Industries and defense contracting.
  6. Bruce Wayne — $31.3 billion. The estimate rests on inherited wealth and Wayne Enterprises.
  7. Forrest Gump — $27 billion. GOBankingRates bases the estimate on his fictional investment in Apple shares.
  8. Richie Rich — $23.9 billion. The character is presented as an heir to his parents’ fortune.
  9. C. Montgomery Burns — $10.4 billion. His fictional power plant is the stated business basis for the estimate.
  10. Lex Luthor — $10.1 billion. The estimate is attributed to LexCorp and its business holdings.
  11. Willy Wonka — $8.4 billion. His chocolate factory is treated as the core asset.
  12. Jabba the Hutt — $8.4 billion. The article describes wealth accumulated through criminal control of piracy, slavery, and illegal goods.
  13. Charles Foster Kane — $5.8 billion. The estimate traces his fortune to inherited mining wealth and a newspaper business.
  14. Lara Croft — $1.3 billion. Her wealth is attributed to inheritance and Croft Estates.
  15. Rich Uncle Pennybags / Mr. Monopoly — $1.2 billion. The estimate is tied to real estate holdings in the Atlantic City area.

Why the richest-character rankings disagree

There is no canonical balance sheet for fictional characters, and different rankings use different years, stories, and assumptions. Forbes’ 2005 Fictional 15 began with Santa Claus, listed as having infinite wealth, followed by Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks at $27.3 billion and Richie Rich at $17 billion. Scrooge McDuck was sixth at $8.2 billion, and Bruce Wayne eighth at $6.5 billion. See Forbes’ 2005 list.

Forbes’ 2002 ranking also put Santa Claus first with infinite wealth, but Richie Rich came second at $24.7 billion and Warbucks third at $10 billion. Forbes acknowledged that it took “certain minor liberties with the stories as presented on the page or on the screen.” Read Forbes’ 2002 list and its qualification.

In 2012, Forbes’ reported leader was Smaug at $62 billion, followed by Flintheart Glomgold at $51.9 billion and Carlisle Cullen at $36.3 billion. The report said Forbes drew on fictional source material and, where possible, real-world commodity and share-price movements. Tony Stark was listed at $9.3 billion. What “wealth” means in these estimates

The order changes when a list compares unlike things. T’Challa’s $90 trillion estimate is tied to Wakanda’s vibranium reserves, while the same 2025 article cites a much lower figure for his personal wealth. A nation’s resources are not the same as an individual’s assets. Likewise, a dragon’s hoard is tangible treasure, while a business owner’s fortune may depend on the value of company holdings, and an heir’s wealth may include property accumulated by a family.

Rank #2
  • Personal or national wealth: T’Challa’s placement depends heavily on whether Wakanda’s resources are counted as his wealth.
  • Treasure or business holdings: Smaug’s hoard and Scrooge’s accumulated fortune are unlike estimates based on companies such as Stark Industries or Wayne Enterprises.
  • Inherited or built fortunes: Richie Rich and Bruce Wayne are associated with inherited wealth; characters such as Tony Stark are linked to corporate and inventive work.
  • Changing stories and valuations: Characters have multiple continuities across books, comics, films, and games. Commodity prices and share prices can also change over time, so even a published estimate may not remain stable.
