Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program has supported 15 documentaries about immigrant and refugee experiences, spanning far more than border crossings. The films explore migrant labor, family separation, exile, detention, activism, disability, identity and the effort to build community. This is a curated selection, not a comprehensive list of immigration documentaries. The titles, support histories and viewing notes below come from Sundance Institute’s guide published October 8, 2026.

Which immigration documentary should you watch?

Choose by subject and style: Backside: The Unseen Hands of Horse Racing and The Hand That Feeds center workers and organizing; Midnight Traveler follows a family in flight; The Infiltrators combines documentary material with reenactments; and unseen connects immigration with disability through audio-centric filmmaking. For a longer view of resettlement, try the seven-part series The New Americans.

The guide includes documentary films and one series. Sundance support varies by project: it includes Documentary Fund grants as well as awards and other program support. Premiere dates and awards are historical context; they do not establish where a title can be watched now.

15 Sundance-supported documentaries about immigration

Work, labor and opportunity

  • Backside: The Unseen Hands of Horse Racing. Across a racing season, the film follows migrant workers behind the Kentucky Derby, attending to their work, expertise, friendships and community. Sundance’s 2026 guide quotes Documentary Film Fund Manager Dominic Davis: “Close studies of the track’s workers illustrate their labor, skill, and commitment at work — and their attempts to build lives and community off-site — revealing how class and race intersect in the United States.” Supported by the 2024 Documentary Fund, it premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival. • Made in L.A.. Over three years, three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles sweatshops pursue basic labor protections from Forever 21. The film received a 2006 Work in Progress grant and 2007 Documentary Fund support, and premiered at Silverdocs in 2007. Sundance links to viewing options.
  • The Hand That Feeds. Twelve undocumented workers at a New York City restaurant confront workplace abuse and deportation threats as they organize. The project received Documentary Fund support in 2013 and 2014 and premiered at the 2014 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. Sundance links to viewing options.
  • The Last Out. Three Cuban baseball players leave their families and risk exile in pursuit of professional careers in the United States, encountering migration barriers and dubious agents. The film received 2018 Documentary Fund support and premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. Sundance quotes Director of Documentary Film & Artist Programs Kristin Feeley: “With incredible access, The Last Out follows three baseball players who risk everything to make it in the major leagues, showing how high the barriers are for players coming from Cuba.” Sundance links to viewing options.

Flight, exile and family

  • Midnight Traveler. Afghan filmmaker Hassan Fazili documents his family’s flight after the Taliban places a bounty on him. The film foregrounds the dangers of seeking asylum while keeping family life in flight at its center. It received 2018 Documentary Fund support, premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and received the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for No Borders. Sundance links to viewing options.
  • Imago. Déni Oumar Pitsaev returns to a remote Georgian valley near Chechnya, from which he was exiled as a child, and plans a house that challenges local traditions. The film received 2022 Documentary Fund support and premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Sundance’s guide describes it as currently screening at festivals; schedules change, so check for current listings.
  • My Father and Qaddafi. Jihan K investigates her father’s disappearance and her mother’s 19-year search while reconnecting with her Libyan identity. The film received 2025 Documentary Fund support and premiered at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival. Sundance’s guide describes it as currently screening at festivals; check current listings.

Detention, identity and resistance

  • The Infiltrators. Two young immigrants deliberately get arrested and enter a for-profit detention center as part of an effort to stop deportations. The film uses reenactments alongside limited recordings. Its support includes the 2016 Documentary Fund, 2016 Documentary Short Fund, 2017 Documentary Edit and Story Lab, and 2019 Luminate Fund. It premiered at Sundance in 2019. Sundance links to viewing options and notes that community screenings are ongoing.

  • Sonita. An undocumented Afghan teenager in Iran turns to rap as her family plans to marry her off for $8,000. That amount belongs to the film’s story, not to a broader statistic about migration or marriage. Sundance links to viewing options.

  • unseen. Pedro, a blind, undocumented aspiring social worker, faces barriers to education. The film’s experimental, audio-centric approach connects immigration with disability and mental health. It received Documentary Fund support in 2021 and 2023 and premiered at Hot Docs in 2023. Sundance names Kanopy among its streaming platforms and says the film is free with a public library or university card; check the platform’s current catalog and access requirements.

Where to watch the films

Sundance’s guide provides viewing-option links for several titles and names specific services for Eat Bitter and unseen. It does not establish a current platform for every film. Check the guide’s linked options before watching, since streaming catalogs, library access and festival schedules can change. In particular, the guide’s festival-screening notes for Imago and My Father and Qaddafi reflect the status it reported, not a guarantee of future dates.
