Kristen Bell’s career began long before she voiced Anna in Frozen. From Detroit-area theater to Broadway, Veronica Mars, animation, narration and candid conversations about mental health, these 15 facts trace the less-obvious parts of her path.

From Detroit theater to Broadway

1. She was born in Michigan

Kristen Anne Bell was born on July 18, 1980, in Huntington Woods, Michigan, according to her Golden Globes biography.

2. One of her first roles was a banana and a tree

As a child, Bell appeared in a Detroit-area production of Raggedy Ann and Andy in the dual role of “banana and tree,” a detail recalled in D23’s profile.

3. She did local commercials

D23 says Bell signed with an agent and appeared in Detroit-area commercials as a young performer. The profile does not identify the advertisements.

Animation, comedy and creative projects

10. Anna’s personality felt familiar to Bell

Bell voices Anna in Frozen and reprised the character in Frozen 2, several shorts and other Disney productions. D23 quotes her describing Anna as “scrappy and weird and puts her foot in her mouth and is way overly excitable,” adding, “And that’s kind of how I am.”

11. She also played a sloth in Zootopia

In Disney’s 2016 animated film Zootopia, Bell voiced Priscilla, a sloth. It is a smaller, very different character from Anna, another example of her animation work documented by D23.

12. She hosted a reunion show for high-school musicals

Bell executive-produced and hosted Encore!, a 2019–2020 series that reunited casts of high-school musicals. D23 quotes her explaining the broader goal: “Immediately, we all knew we wanted the show to be more than just a musical theater show; we wanted it to be a human show.”

13. She connects comedy with moral questions

Speaking to The Guardian about The Good Place, Bell described it as “taking philosophy lessons, wrapping them in a fart joke, and making them digestible.” The interview also reflects her interest in morally complex characters.

Personal openness and public milestones

14. She has spoken about anxiety and depression

In a 2016 first-person essay for TIME, Bell wrote about her experience of anxiety and depression, the help she sought during college, and the importance she places on reducing shame around mental health. “I didn’t speak publicly about my struggles with mental health for the first 15 years of my career,” she wrote. These are Bell’s personal reflections, not a diagnosis or a universal account. Read her TIME essay and a related TV Guide feature.

15. The Veronica Mars film campaign raised $2 million in less than eleven hours

Disney+ reported in a 2019 publicity biography that the 2014 Veronica Mars film campaign raised $2 million on Kickstarter in less than eleven hours. This is a historical figure attributed to that Disney+ biography, not a current fundraising result; see the Disney+ biography.

More recognition than a single role

D23 says Bell was inducted as a Disney Legend in 2022 and received a 2020 Webby Special Achievement Award for contributions to online COVID-19 relief and educational efforts. Her awards record also includes nominations, which should not be mistaken for wins: the Golden Globes profile lists nominations for The Good Place in 2019 and Nobody Wants This in 2025 and 2026. The Television Academy lists 2025 and 2026 Emmy nominations connected to Nobody Wants This.
