Children’s museums are designed around children’s interests, with exhibits and programs that encourage curiosity and learning. But a museum’s seasonal event—or its inclusion in a national program—is not proof of what it offers year-round. Use the 15 institutions below as starting points for a family outing, then check each museum’s current exhibits, hours, admission, and age guidance before you go.

What makes a children’s museum a place to learn through play?

The Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) defines a children’s museum as a nonprofit educational and cultural institution that serves children’s needs and interests through exhibits and programs that stimulate curiosity and motivate learning. ACM also describes these museums as local destinations, educational laboratories, community resources, and advocates for children. ACM’s overview of its mission and approach explains the field’s commitment to play, development, equity, and inclusion.

Play is the shared premise, not a single format. One museum may invite imaginative role-play; another may use interactive exhibits or scheduled programs. ACM’s research-network page notes that many staff members in its study valued play, while few had formal descriptions of what play meant or how it supported learning at their institutions. That is a useful reminder to look at what a specific museum actually offers rather than assume every venue uses play in the same way. ACM’s Children’s Museums Research Network describes the association’s work on these questions.

15 children’s museums to explore

These 15 museums appeared among the venues scheduled for ACM’s 2026 Gabby’s Dollhouse MEOWseum Discovery Days activation. Their inclusion makes them useful places to begin planning, not a ranking or a guarantee of permanent exhibits. The event announcement describes activities that varied by location, including storytime, a character scavenger hunt, dancing, crafts, and character meet-and-greets; those are event examples, not year-round descriptions of each museum. ACM’s June 17, 2026 announcement gives the partnership context and venue list.

How to choose the right museum for your family

  • Start close to home. ACM’s museum finder supports searches by keyword, location, state, country, or category. ACM advises visitors to contact a museum or visit its site for trip information.
  • Match the outing to your child. Look for age guidance and the kinds of experiences your child enjoys, such as imaginative activities, interactive exhibits, storytime, or crafting. Confirm those offerings on the museum’s own current pages.
  • Check the date, not just the event name. Seasonal exhibits and special events can change. Confirm dates, hours, admission, and any booking requirements directly with the venue.
  • Check reciprocal admission carefully. ACM says only map listings marked with the red Reciprocal Network logo are participants. Do not assume that every museum in its finder, or every museum named in a special event announcement, offers reciprocal admission.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
