These 15 anime make a protagonist’s previous life or rebirth central to the story—but they do not all use the same mechanism. “Isekai” is broader: some characters die and are reborn, some are summoned, and others are transported to another world. This ranking weighs how clearly that premise shapes the plot, how the lead’s old identity affects the new life, and the range of pleasures on offer, from comedy and personal growth to politics and world-building. It is an editorial selection, not an official or universal ranking.
How this ranking works
The list prioritizes shows where reincarnation or rebirth materially drives the protagonist’s story. It distinguishes rebirth after death from summoning or transfer rather than treating every isekai as reincarnation. The order balances premise, use of the protagonist’s former life, and variety of tone and focus; it is not a restatement of a database ranking.
That distinction matters because the category is broad. Akiko Komura’s 2023 survey identified 76 isekai reincarnation anime aired on Japanese television from the 1980s through March 2023. In that sample, about 40% of protagonists were summoned by someone in another world, while about 28% were reincarnated by a god or god-like being after dying in this world. Those proportions describe Komura’s sample, not all anime. Komura’s study also shows how much the protagonists’ former identities can vary.
The 15 best reincarnation anime
1. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
A 34-year-old shut-in dies and awakens as Rudeus, a baby in a world of swords and magic. The story follows his attempt to live differently in this second life, making the gap between his former self and new circumstances central to the drama. That emphasis on long-term growth makes it the strongest overall fit for this list. The official introduction establishes the premise and Rudeus’s resolve to live earnestly: Mushoku Tensei official site.

2. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
An ordinary company worker’s life ends, and he is reborn in a fantasy world as a slime. It is a strong pick for viewers who want world-building and an expanding cast alongside the rebirth premise.
The franchise began as a web novel, later received a substantially revised novel publication, and expanded into manga and anime. The official franchise portal reported circulation exceeding 40 million copies across the franchise, including related books, as of February 2023; that is a dated figure, not a current sales total.
