If you want another wildly powerful fantasy lead, start with The Misfit of Demon King Academy. If the secretive mastermind and loyal followers are what hooked you, try Overlord—but expect a darker story. No series here reproduces the full combination of hidden identity, shadow organization, comic misunderstandings, and action that makes The Eminence in Shadow distinctive. This subjective ranking puts the closest matches first, then moves toward looser fantasy and isekai alternatives.
How these anime compare with The Eminence in Shadow
“Similar” can mean very different things here. Cid is both overwhelmingly capable and committed to a secret persona; the people around him take his performance seriously, often with consequences he does not intend. The recommendations below are ordered by a blend of premise overlap and broader appeal, not by an objective measure of quality.
- Closest for power fantasy: a dominant lead and spectacular fantasy action.
- Closest for hidden ability: a capable protagonist who conceals what he can do.
- Closest for followers and misinterpretation: subordinates who act on their own understanding of a leader’s plans.
- Looser picks: shows that share an isekai, game-world, comedy, or fantasy setting without recreating Cid’s shadow-play.
Streaming availability varies by country and changes over time; the official Japanese service listings do not establish where these titles are currently available elsewhere.

Anos Voldigoad, the reincarnated Demon King, enters a world that has changed since his time. The premise makes this the clearest choice if what you want most is a lead whose power overwhelms the rules everyone else assumes are fixed. Aniplex identifies the series as a television anime beginning in January 2023 and notes a later broadcast segment in 2024; its official page says the light-novel series had exceeded 2.2 million copies in cumulative circulation, without specifying a reporting date. Aniplex’s official series page describes the second season’s conflict involving a new “child of God.”
What differs: Anos is not secretly building Cid’s shadow organization, and the comedy does not depend on the same gap between Cid’s intentions and his followers’ beliefs.
2. Overlord
Best for: a formidable fantasy lead, powerful subordinates, and a darker atmosphere.
If the appeal of Shadow Garden is the feeling that a leader’s followers are carrying out serious plans around him, Overlord is a strong next stop. Its subordinate characters can drive events while interpreting their protagonist as responsible for a larger design. That creates a useful point of comparison with Cid’s accidental-seeming mastermind act.

What differs: Overlord is darker, and its comedy works differently; do not expect the same breezy balance of parody and shadowy theatrics.
3. The Irregular at Magic High School
Best for: concealed capability in an academy setting.
This is the pick if you liked the contrast between a protagonist’s apparent role and what he can actually do. The lead’s abilities are underestimated or hidden within a school environment, with the story also involving military work. Aniplex identifies the anime as a 2014 series that began in April. Its official anime site provides series information.
What differs: the overlap is about concealed ability and the academy setting, not an isekai premise or a secret organization built around a shadow persona.

4. The Saga of Tanya the Evil
Best for: a ruthless, formidable protagonist in military fantasy.
Tanya offers a very different kind of power fantasy: strategic calculation and relentless ambition in a wartime setting. Choose it if you want a dangerous central character and fantasy conflict more than Cid’s playful performance as a hidden leader.
What differs: it is not especially shadowy, and its military focus changes the mood and stakes.
5. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Best for: a broader isekai-fantasy adventure with a capable lead.

It belongs on the list for its broad isekai appeal, rather than for a close match to Cid’s secret identity or comic misunderstandings.
What differs: its central appeal is not a hidden shadow persona or the same kind of organization-centered farce.
6. Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy
Best for: another isekai journey with fantasy action and an unconventional lead.
Tsukimichi is a natural follow-up if you want to stay in isekai fantasy after finishing The Eminence in Shadow. It is a setting-and-genre match rather than a close structural equivalent.

Rank #3
- The Eminence in Shadow: Season 2 - Premium Box Set [Blu-Ray]
What differs: do not go in expecting Cid’s secret organization or the specific joke of his followers taking his offhand remarks as grand strategy.
7. How Not to Summon a Demon Lord
Best for: fantasy comedy built around an imposing protagonist.
This works as a tonal neighbor for viewers who want a fantasy lead whose intimidating persona creates comedic situations. It is a looser pick for fans of the contrast between a fearsome image and comic complications.
What differs: it is not a close equivalent of the shadow-organization plot, and its comedy follows a different setup.
8. Solo Leveling
Best for: high-impact action centered on a powerful lead.
Try Solo Leveling when the part you want to repeat is watching a protagonist become an exceptional force in an action-heavy fantasy world. It is a strong broad match for powerful-lead appeal.
What differs: its appeal is not based on Cid’s comic misunderstandings or a leader’s secret organization.
9. Shangri-La Frontier
Best for: action in a game-world setting.
This offers a different route to fantasy-style action: a game-world adventure rather than a hidden organization operating in the shadows. It is worth considering if the combination of spectacle and an alternate world matters more to you than Cid’s persona.
Rank #4
- Includes episodes 1-20
- Japanese and English Audio with English Subtitles
What differs: the game-world framework does not recreate the same secret-identity fantasy.
10. So I’m a Spider, So What?
Best for: an isekai story with a very different protagonist and structure.
This is a broader genre pick for viewers who want another unusual journey through a fantasy world. Its place here is as an isekai alternative, not as a close match for the way The Eminence in Shadow builds its comedy around Cid and his followers.
What differs: the protagonist and story structure are notably different.
11. Skeleton Knight in Another World
Best for: a straightforward isekai-fantasy alternative.
If you mainly want another adventure in a fantasy world after Cid’s, this is a broader option to add to your list. It shares the genre neighborhood, not the precise combination of concealed identity, organization, and mistaken interpretation.
What differs: the recommendation is based on broad isekai-fantasy appeal rather than a close premise match.
12. Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs
Best for: a game-world setup with an antihero-adjacent lead.
Best Value
This is an option if you enjoy protagonists navigating a world whose rules they understand differently from the people around them. Its game-world premise gives it a distinct angle on power and social maneuvering.
What differs: the dating-sim setting is a long way from a secret shadow organization, even if some of the protagonist’s attitude may appeal to antihero fans.
13. Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious
Best for: comedy built around an overpowered hero.
This is a broad comedy pick for viewers who want an exaggeratedly capable lead and a comic contrast between power and behavior. It shares some power-fantasy territory without sharing Cid’s particular performance as an unseen mastermind.
What differs: its central joke is the hero’s caution, not a secret organization misreading its leader.

Best for: isekai comedy rather than shadowy action.
Choose KonoSuba if you want a more openly comedic fantasy detour. The connection is the broad isekai-comedy space, not a close similarity in protagonist power or secret identity.
What differs: its comedy is a different kind of ensemble farce, with no equivalent to Cid’s hidden organization.
15. Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World
Best for: a very different, character-driven isekai experience.
Re:Zero is the broadest contrast on this list. It gives you another isekai world, but it is not the place to go if what you specifically want is Cid-style invulnerability or a triumphant power fantasy.
What differs: its appeal is quite different from the overpowering-lead fantasy and shadowy comedy at the heart of The Eminence in Shadow.
Quick Recap
Where to begin
- For a bombastic overpowered fantasy lead, start with The Misfit of Demon King Academy.
- For powerful followers and the sense that a leader’s plans are being interpreted around him, choose Overlord.
- For hidden ability in a school setting, try The Irregular at Magic High School.
- For the rest, decide whether you want a different kind of action, isekai setting, game-world premise, or comedy; those are genre neighbors, not full substitutes.
