Spoiler warning: This list reveals major backstory events from the anime and manga named below. It is a curated selection, not an objective ranking: each character’s history is considered through what happened, how much choice or support they had, whether the hardship continued, and how it shaped their later actions.
1. Eren Yeager — Attack on Titan
During the 845 attack on Wall Maria, Eren’s mother died. The official season-one chronology records this loss and later events, including Eren’s leg injury during the defense of Trost; it does not make every later hardship part of that initial tragedy. The loss helps explain the intensity with which Eren pursues freedom and fights the threats facing humanity. Official season-one character chronology.
2. Edward and Alphonse Elric — Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
After their mother’s death, the brothers attempted the forbidden practice of human transmutation. The attempt cost Edward his left leg; he managed to bring Alphonse’s soul back, but Alphonse remained attached to a suit of armor. Their story is not simply about a failed experiment: it is about two young brothers living with its physical consequences and trying to restore what they lost. Official character profiles.
3. Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado — Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
A demon slaughtered Tanjiro’s family and turned his younger sister, Nezuko, into a demon. Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps seeking a way to return her to human form and avenge his family. His grief is bound up with a continuing responsibility: he protects Nezuko while searching for a cure. Official Mugen Train Arc character page.

4. Gaara — Naruto
Gaara’s past is associated with the pain of profound solitude, and his connection with Naruto helps change how he approaches life. The official Naruto feature emphasizes that emotional turning point without providing enough detail to verify every incident in Gaara’s childhood, so his entry is best understood through the lasting effect: isolation gives way to a capacity for connection. Naruto Official Site feature.
5. Nico Robin — One Piece
Robin’s hardship is prolonged persecution rather than one defining loss alone. The official One Piece site describes her as spending twenty years on the run and being scorned as the “Devil Child.” That history makes trust difficult and gives her eventual place among the Straw Hats particular weight: belonging is something she has had to risk accepting. The official story and character synopses establish a childhood marked by instability and loss; his fierce self-reliance grows out of having to survive without dependable shelter. Tragedy in fiction can mean bereavement, violence, persecution, deprivation, or years of isolation. These characters also differ in age, agency, support, and how long their hardship lasts. The list therefore explains each history and its consequences without claiming that one character has suffered “the most.” Official plot summaries establish particular events, but they do not provide a universal measure of suffering.
