This editorial ranking includes those 13 candidates while distinguishing explicit identity from gender left unknown or open to interpretation. The order reflects character depth, importance to the story, clarity of identity evidence, and agency beyond gender; it is a judgment, not an objective measure.
How to read this ranking
“Non-binary” is not a catch-all for every character whose gender is unclear, whose presentation varies, or whose body changes. The evidence below is labeled by type: a character’s own words, creator or official framing, or an interpretation. In particular, gender unspecified is not the same thing as a confirmed non-binary identity.
Ranker’s page, updated May 1, 2025, lists 13 characters and describes its ordering as dynamically based on user voting. It showed 652 voters and 2.0K votes when observed on October 7, 2026; those are page-state figures that can change, not measures of representation or quality. This ranking uses the same 13 candidates but applies the editorial criteria stated above rather than reproducing Ranker’s changing vote order: Ranker’s list.
The characters, ranked
1. Yuta Asuka (Stars Align)
Evidence: in-story self-description, with nuance. Yuta’s conversation about gender gives the clearest basis among these entries for calling a character non-binary: they learn the term and find it fitting, while also expressing discomfort with being boxed into a category. A September 15, 2026 guide uses the name Yu Asuka and notes the episode’s Japanese term x-gender; spellings and romanization can vary. The important point is that the character’s own words support the label without making it the whole of their identity. 2. Phos (Land of the Lustrous)
Evidence: genderless species portrayal. Phos is the protagonist of a story whose gem characters are described as having no gender. That gives the series a sustained, central exploration of characters outside a gender binary, although it is not identical to a human character explicitly identifying as non-binary. Phos ranks highly for narrative importance and the way identity exists within the world-building rather than as a one-off reveal.
3. Hange Zoë (Attack on Titan)
Evidence: creator openness, not explicit self-identification. Ranker reports that creator Hajime Isayama left Hange’s gender identity to readers and asked the English publisher to avoid gendered pronouns. That supports reading Hange as gender-ambiguous or non-binary, but does not establish an explicit non-binary label in the story. The distinction matters: authorial openness is not the same as a character naming their identity.
4. Kino (Kino’s Journey)
Evidence: reported resistance to binary labels. Ranker says Kino resists being called either a girl or a boy and reports confirmation from the manga’s publisher. The available account makes Kino a strong candidate for a non-binary reading, but the source reviewed here is a ranked-list description rather than the primary publisher statement. Kino’s journey-centered role also gives the character more to do than serve as a gender discussion.

5. Crona (Soul Eater)
Evidence: gender described as unknown. Ranker reports that creator Atsushi Okubo described Crona’s gender as “unknown,” and notes that Japanese phrasing can avoid gendered pronouns. That is a meaningful gender-ambiguous portrayal, not proof that Crona explicitly identifies as non-binary. The question “Is Crona non-binary?” therefore has no definitive answer on the evidence available: unknown or ungendered is the more careful description.

Evidence: presentation and identity remain debated. Haruka shifts between masculine and feminine presentation, and Ranker notes that the precise identity label is debated. Presentation alone does not settle identity. Haruka is important to discussions of gender nonconformity in anime, but a definitive non-binary label would go beyond the evidence summarized by the source.
7. Nathan Seymour (Tiger & Bunny)
Evidence: described as non-binary by a secondary list. Ranker describes Nathan as non-binary with feminine leanings. The reviewed material did not independently confirm the label through primary or official sources, so this entry is less firmly supported than Yuta’s in-story self-description. Nathan’s inclusion should be read as a reported characterization, not a verified creator statement.

8. Najimi Osana (Komi Can’t Communicate)
Evidence: identity unspecified; interpretation based partly on presentation. Ranker says Najimi’s identity is not known and treats non-binary as a likely fit based on presentation. That is an interpretation, not explicit canon. Najimi’s ambiguity may invite a non-binary reading, but appearance or social role alone cannot establish a character’s identity.
9. Orochimaru (Naruto)
Evidence: a scene that resists parent-role labels. Ranker points to Orochimaru rejecting the description of being either a mother or a father in a scene, while using he/him pronouns. That moment can support a gender-nonconforming interpretation, but it does not by itself establish a non-binary identity. Pronouns and identity are related but not interchangeable.
10. Opera (Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun)
Evidence: gender left ambiguous. Ranker describes Opera’s sex and gender as ambiguous and says the author leaves the questions unanswered. Ambiguity is the accurate description; the available source does not establish a non-binary self-identification.

11. Nanachi (Made in Abyss)
Evidence: creator reportedly says sex is unknown. Ranker reports that creator Akihito Tsukushi said Nanachi’s sex is unknown. Unknown sex should not be rewritten as confirmed non-binary identity. The character may be included in broader conversations about gender ambiguity, with that limitation made clear.
12. Riri (Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl)
Evidence: transformation premise, not confirmed identity. Ranker describes Riri as a magical character who transforms between male and female forms. A transformation mechanism does not, by itself, show that a character identifies as non-binary. This entry is best understood as a gender-related premise rather than firm evidence of non-binary identity.
13. Desmond (Mitchiko & Hatchin)
Evidence: adaptation wording differs. Ranker notes that the original describes Desmond as intersex, while a dub uses non-binary wording. Intersex describes sex characteristics; non-binary describes gender identity. The terms are not interchangeable, and a difference in adaptation language should not be flattened into a single definitive label.

What the list does—and does not—show
These characters cover several distinct kinds of representation: a character who finds a non-binary term fitting, a genderless fictional species, creators leaving gender open, and cases where a ranked list or adaptation supplies an interpretation. Treating them all as equally confirmed would erase those differences.
