The clearest shared example is the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s 2023 emergency-aid campaign: it named a group of actors and public figures who donated at least $1 million to the program. Other published figures distinguish personal donations from money raised for charities—a crucial difference when assessing what an actor actually gave.
Which actors donated to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s 2023 emergency-aid campaign?
In an August 2, 2023 announcement, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation said its Emergency Financial Assistance Program had raised more than $15 million in the preceding three weeks. The Foundation named the following patrons as donors of $1 million or more to the program. The announcement does not assign a specific amount to each person, so the campaign total should not be read as an individual gift or divided among the donors.
- George and Amal Clooney
- Luciana and Matt Damon
- Leonardo DiCaprio
- Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness
- Dwayne Johnson
- Nicole Kidman
- Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck
- Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
- Julia Roberts
- Arnold Schwarzenegger
- Meryl Streep
- Oprah Winfrey
The program supports eligible SAG-AFTRA performers facing unexpected financial crises. The Foundation’s announcement described exceptional demand: its president, Courtney B. Vance, said it was processing more than 30 times its usual number of emergency-aid applications. This is a dated account of a particular campaign, not a current fundraising total or evidence that each named person has continued giving at that level. What published figures say about other actors’ giving
Alec Baldwin
The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported nearly $17.6 million in charitable giving through Baldwin’s foundation over the decade covered by its article. It also reported more than $2.7 million to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts since 1993, more than $1.7 million to East Hampton Library, and $1 million to the New York Philharmonic. The retrieved article text does not show its publication date, so these are historical reported figures, not verified current totals. See the Chronicle’s coverage.

Leonardo DiCaprio
The same Chronicle article reported that DiCaprio had raised at least $61 million for more than 65 climate, biodiversity, and conservation programs since 1998. It separately said public records showed about $3.2 million of his own money donated. The $61 million is a fundraising figure, not a personal-donation total; the article’s publication date is not visible in the retrieved text. See the Chronicle’s coverage.
How to read claims about celebrity giving
A personal gift is not the same as money raised
An actor may donate personal funds, give through a foundation, or help raise money from other donors. Those are different forms of support. DiCaprio’s reported fundraising and personal-donation figures illustrate why a total raised should not be described as money the actor personally gave.

A pledge is not a completed donation
The Giving Pledge describes a commitment by wealthy participants to give the majority of their wealth to charitable causes during their lifetimes or in their wills. Joining the pledge does not establish that a particular amount has already been paid. Its official directory describes a global community of more than 250 donors from 30 countries; that count is the directory’s current description and can change. See the Giving Pledge’s definition and directory.
Advocacy and benefit work can help without documenting a personal gift
Promoting a cause or encouraging fans to donate can generate support, but it does not prove that the celebrity has pledged or given a particular amount. The Chronicle described the historical Hollywood Pledge as encouraging celebrities to promote charities and invite fans to give time or money—not as a promise to donate a specified share of personal earnings. Read the Chronicle’s June 3, 2011 article.

Why there is no reliable ranking of the 13 biggest celebrity donors here
The available reporting does not establish a definitive set of 13 actors or comparable lifetime totals. The historical Chronicle article also discusses George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, Michael J. Fox, George Lucas, Kirk Douglas, and Anne Douglas, but the reviewed text does not supply detailed figures for each. Naming them as leads is not enough to support a specific amount or rank.
Comparisons are meaningful only when they distinguish the recipient and cause, date or period, personal gifts versus funds raised, and completed donations versus pledges. The figures above come from a historical journalism report and a Foundation announcement tied to a 2023 campaign; neither should be presented as a live total of an actor’s lifetime giving.
