Plan an Easter egg hunt by choosing a suitable space, tailoring the challenge to participants, setting clear boundaries, and preparing a safe way to handle treats and cleanup. These 12 steps work for a family gathering, classroom, or community event; adjust the scale to your group and venue.

1. Decide who is coming and what kind of hunt to hold

Consider participants’ ages, abilities, and group size before choosing the format. A simple search may suit a family gathering, while older children might enjoy clues or a scavenger-hunt route. Build the difficulty and any extra activities around the people taking part.

2. Pick a date, time, and place

Choose a time that works for participating families and a location with enough space to define clear boundaries. A backyard, park, or indoor room can work depending on the group and conditions. If the hunt is outdoors, prepare an indoor backup in case the weather changes. For a public venue, check its rules with the venue or local authority.

3. Walk the site before the event

Inspect the full hunting area at a child’s eye level. Look for hazards, uneven or slippery footing, fragile areas, and places where eggs might be lost. Avoid hiding spots that require climbing, unsafe reaching, or entering an area outside the boundary. The U.S. Army’s Easter safety guidance recommends adult supervision and avoiding hazardous locations.

4. Divide the hunt fairly

When ages or abilities vary, use separate rounds or zones. You can assign each child a color in a small hunt, or give age groups different colors in a larger one. This helps younger children find eggs without being overtaken by older participants. Hallmark offers age-based and color-coded hunt ideas.

5. Set a realistic challenge level

Keep eggs easy to see for toddlers and younger children. Older children can follow clues or search among more discreet hiding places, provided every egg remains safely reachable and inside the boundaries. A harder hunt should not mean hiding eggs up high, near hazards, or somewhere inaccessible.

6. Choose what goes inside

Candy is one option; stickers, small toys, or other surprises can also work. Ask families about allergies ahead of time, and check product ingredients rather than relying on packaging appearance. For young children, follow age guidance and avoid small items that could pose a choking hazard. Food Allergy Canada’s Easter guidance notes that small non-food objects can also be choking risks.

7. Choose real or plastic eggs

Fillable plastic eggs are a practical option for a hunt and can be color-coded. FoodSafety.gov also suggests considering plastic eggs. If you plan to eat decorated hard-cooked eggs, use food-grade dye and keep the eggs refrigerated until serving. Do not leave them at room temperature for more than two hours. Keep eggs protected from dirt, pets, and other potential sources of bacteria, as advised by the Minnesota Department of Health.

8. Plan the egg count and collection

Choose an egg count that fits your group, venue, and desired difficulty. There is no universal number that suits every hunt. A basket or collection bag for each child can make gathering easier. If using real eggs, count them before hiding so you can check the total afterward; Hallmark also recommends counting real eggs.

9. Mark the boundaries and explain the rules

Before the start, show children exactly where they may hunt and where they must not go. Explain any color assignments, what to do if they find an egg meant for someone else, and how to ask an adult for help. At a larger event, tell supervising adults which area they are responsible for watching.

10. Stage the hunt and supervise

11. Offer an inclusive alternative

Provide a non-food option for children who cannot safely have the treats on offer. This might be a separate color-coded hunt, non-food fillers, or an Easter craft. Match materials to participants’ ages and keep small craft pieces away from young children. Food Allergy Canada suggests non-food fillers and crafts as alternatives.

  • Use food-grade dye on eggs intended to be eaten.
  • Do not leave edible eggs at room temperature for more than two hours.
