Falls, trips and recoveries
1. Ming Xi at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (2017)
At the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, Ming Xi tripped over her skirt during the Goddess segment and fell to her knees. She kept her composure and completed her walk with help from fellow model Gizele Oliveira; the audience cheered as she stood. Vogue’s report captured a stumble that became as memorable for the recovery as for the fall.
2. Karen Elson at Zac Posen (2008)
Karen Elson fell during Zac Posen’s 2008 show and was helped up by Sean “Diddy” Combs, according to Teen Vogue’s retrospective. His assistance turned a routine runway moment into a particularly visible recovery.
3. Candice Swanepoel at Givenchy (Spring 2016)
At Givenchy’s Spring 2016 show, Candice Swanepoel slipped in pointed-toe heels and received help from people nearby. Teen Vogue reports the slip and assistance; it does not establish that the shoes were the sole cause.

4. A model at Anthony Vaccarello (Fall 2012)
A model tripped during Anthony Vaccarello’s Fall 2012 show and was helped by two fellow models, Teen Vogue reports. Like several runway mishaps, it became a moment of group improvisation rather than a walk simply ending.
5. Lindsey Wixson at Fashion for Relief (2011)
Lindsey Wixson fell at the 2011 Fashion for Relief show in Cannes, hosted by Naomi Campbell, according to Teen Vogue. The report establishes the fall, but not an injury.

6. Agyness Deyn at Fashion for Relief (2010)
At the 2010 Fashion for Relief show benefiting Haiti, Agyness Deyn fell twice, removed her shoes and walked the rest of the way barefoot, according to Teen Vogue. Her response made the incident a striking example of adapting mid-show.
When the shoes became the story
7. Naomi Campbell in Vivienne Westwood shoes (1993)
Naomi Campbell’s famous 1993 tumble is closely associated with the vertiginous shoes Vivienne Westwood designed. British Vogue says the shoes “facilitated” the fall. That is the magazine’s characterization, not a technical determination of exactly what caused it.
Rank #3
8. Prada’s sky-high shoes (2008/09 season)
British Vogue described problems for multiple models’ feet and knees in Prada’s 2008/09 season, while theFashionSpot also recalled several models teetering at the 2009 show. The reports describe a broader shoe ordeal, rather than one isolated fall.
9. Eley Kishimoto’s shoe malfunction (2009)
At Eley Kishimoto in 2009, one model kicked off her shoes after a malfunction. At Basso & Brooke, models walked very slowly to avoid a similar mishap, British Vogue reports. The comparison shows how footwear trouble could affect both an individual walk and the pace of a show.
10. The final look at Burberry Prorsum (Spring/Summer 2011)
At Burberry Prorsum’s Spring/Summer 2011 show in London on September 21, 2010, the model wearing the final look lost her footing, fell to her knees and lost a shoe. She quickly recovered and finished the walk holding the heel, according to CBS News. CBS does not name the model, so this account does not attach a name to the incident.
11. Daisy Lowe at Vivienne Westwood Red Label (2009)
Daisy Lowe took a trip during the 2009 Vivienne Westwood Red Label show, according to British Vogue. The report notes the incident but gives little further detail, so it is best remembered as a brief stumble rather than embellished into a larger mishap.

12. Yeezy Season 9 (2022)
Yeezy Season 9 belongs on a list of fashion-show failures for a different reason: controversy over its message, not a physical runway accident. TIME’s September 2022 account says the show was overshadowed by backlash after Kanye West wore a “White Lives Matter” shirt. TIME also notes that West later attacked Vogue editor and stylist Gabriella Karefa-Johnson online after she criticized the shirt.
What these runway fails show
There is no single pattern behind these incidents. Some reports explicitly connect a fall or instability to shoes; others describe trips over garments or offer too little detail to establish a cause. And a physical stumble is not the same kind of failure as a show whose message dominates the coverage. Together, they make an entertaining retrospective—but not a universal ranking of the worst runway moments.
