There is no audited public record of actresses’ total career earnings. Film contracts are private, and a performer’s income may include salaries, bonuses, profit participation, residuals, producing fees, endorsements and licensing deals.
The most defensible comparison is therefore each actress’s highest publicly documented annual entertainment earnings. The figures below come primarily from Forbes estimates and, for the top entry, the Guinness World Records record based on Forbes reporting. They are nominal U.S. dollars and are not adjusted for inflation.

The 12 highest documented annual earnings
This is not a ranking of net worth, lifetime income or individual movie salaries. Measurement periods also vary: some estimates cover a calendar year, while older Forbes lists used periods such as June-to-June or May-to-May.

1. Margot Robbie — $59 million
Margot Robbie recorded the highest annual earnings figure in the sources reviewed. Forbes estimated that she earned $59 million in calendar year 2023, largely because of Barbie. Robbie was not only the film’s star but also one of its producers, giving her a stake beyond a conventional acting fee.
#1 Best Overall
Forbes attributed approximately 12.5% of the film’s back-end profits to Robbie and estimated that her eventual Barbie back-end could exceed $60 million. Guinness World Records lists her $59 million total as the record for the highest annual earnings by a film actress.

2=. Sandra Bullock — $56 million
Forbes estimated Bullock’s earnings at $56 million between June 2009 and June 2010. The figure reflected more than a single salary. It included compensation associated with The Proposal and The Blind Side, as well as producing work and back-end participation.
Her success was not limited to that period. Forbes estimated that Bullock earned another $51 million between June 2013 and June 2014, largely because of Gravity. Both figures show why annual earnings can rise sharply when a performer negotiates participation in a successful film.

2=. Scarlett Johansson — $56 million
Scarlett Johansson reached the same documented peak as Bullock, with $56 million between June 2018 and June 2019. Forbes attributed approximately $35 million to back-end compensation from Avengers: Endgame, together with a substantial fee for Black Widow.
The total illustrates the financial importance of Marvel’s compensation structure. A headline salary is only part of the picture when a performer has negotiated bonuses or a share of a film’s performance. Forbes later estimated Johansson’s 2025 earnings at $43 million, but that newer estimate used a different methodology and does not replace her higher documented peak.

4. Julia Roberts — $54.5 million
Forbes reported $54.5 million in earnings for Julia Roberts in its 2000 coverage. That total included back-end earnings from Notting Hill and Runaway Bride, alongside compensation connected with Erin Brockovich.
Roberts’ annual figure is often confused with her individual-film salaries. She was widely reported to have received a $20 million upfront salary for Erin Brockovich and $25 million for Mona Lisa Smile. Those are film-by-film compensation figures, not alternatives to the $54.5 million annual estimate.

5. Jennifer Lawrence — $52 million
Jennifer Lawrence earned an estimated $52 million during Forbes’ 2015 12-month measurement period. That made her the highest-paid actress in the world for that year. The estimate was driven chiefly by The Hunger Games and related film work, with endorsements included in the wider total.
Forbes subsequently estimated Lawrence’s 2016 earnings at $46 million, making her the highest-paid actress in two consecutive years. Her position came during the commercial peak of The Hunger Games franchise, when her negotiating power was unusually strong.
6. Sofia Vergara — $44.1 million
Vergara’s $44.1 million between June 2018 and June 2019 came from a mixture of entertainment and commercial income. Modern Family was central, but Forbes also counted endorsements, licensing and business arrangements involving products such as jeans and furniture.
It is therefore inaccurate to describe the entire sum as Vergara’s television salary. Her example is especially useful when comparing “highest-paid actress” lists: the reported total may include income generated by a performer’s wider commercial profile.

7. Jennifer Aniston — $42 million
Forbes estimated Aniston’s calendar-year 2023 earnings at $42 million after representation fees. The same report gave a higher gross estimate of $56 million before those fees, which is why it is important to identify whether a figure is gross or net of representation costs.
Rank #3
Her income included acting and executive producing on The Morning Show, Murder Mystery 2, endorsements and continuing Friends residuals. Forbes reported that Aniston could earn approximately $2 million per episode for acting and executive-producing The Morning Show.
8. Angelina Jolie — $35.5 million
Angelina Jolie’s peak documented annual estimate in the sources reviewed is $35.5 million in Forbes’ 2020 ranking. Forbes said the total came largely from film compensation, particularly her upcoming Marvel film Eternals.

Unlike some entries that combine acting with extensive endorsements or licensing, Jolie’s 2020 total was described as coming almost entirely from traditional film work. Forbes had previously estimated her 2013 earnings at $33 million, driven substantially by her upfront compensation for Maleficent.
9. Reese Witherspoon — $35 million
Witherspoon earned an estimated $35 million between June 2018 and June 2019. Forbes included her acting and producing work, including Big Little Lies, as well as television income.
The estimate also reflected approximately $1.2 million per episode for each of 10 episodes of The Morning Show during the relevant period. Her position on the list demonstrates how producing and television deals can materially change an actress’s annual earnings beyond theatrical film salaries.
10=. Kristen Stewart — $34.5 million
Forbes estimated Stewart’s earnings at $34.5 million between May 2011 and May 2012. Her total included compensation from the final Twilight films, profit participation, Snow White and the Huntsman and endorsements.
The figure is sometimes presented as though it were Stewart’s salary for one film. It was not. Reports of approximately $12.5 million per film for the final two Twilight installments are separate salary estimates; the $34.5 million figure covered the complete measurement period.
Rank #4
10=. Cameron Diaz — $34 million
Cameron Diaz earned an estimated $34 million between May 2011 and May 2012. Forbes counted her work in Bad Teacher, What to Expect When You’re Expecting and The Green Hornet, along with profit participation.
Forbes had also estimated Diaz’s earnings at $32 million in its 2010 actress ranking. Those figures are annual estimates and should not be mistaken for the amount she personally kept after taxes, fees and other deductions.

10=. Nicole Kidman — $34 million
Nicole Kidman’s documented peak in this comparison is $34 million between June 2018 and June 2019. Forbes included Big Little Lies, film roles and producing-related compensation.

These are annual earnings, not lifetime earnings
A cumulative career ranking would require private information about every contract, residual payment, bonus, producing fee, endorsement, tax bill and representation cost. It would also require a decision about whether to adjust historical figures for inflation. No reliable public dataset provides all of that information.
Forbes changed its methods
Older Forbes lists generally reported pretax estimates without deducting agent, manager or lawyer fees. The newer Forbes methodology used for its 2025 ranking reported calendar-year earnings after representation fees and excluded unrelated licensing, commercial, social-media and other entrepreneurial income. A 2000 figure and a 2023 figure are consequently useful points of comparison, but not perfectly equivalent measurements.
“Highest-paid actress” does not mean acting salary only
The reported totals may combine acting, producing, profit participation, residuals, endorsements, advertising and licensing. Sofia Vergara’s $44.1 million is a clear example: her Modern Family income was supplemented by commercial and licensing arrangements.

Why Jennifer Lopez is not included
Jennifer Lopez has appeared near the top of broader women-in-entertainment rankings. Forbes estimated her 2019 earnings at $43 million, but that total was associated primarily with music, concerts and wider entertainment activities. Since this list focuses on actresses’ documented annual entertainment earnings in actress-specific comparisons, Lopez is not automatically included.
FAQ
Is this a ranking of the richest actresses?
No. It ranks the highest publicly documented annual entertainment earnings found in the cited Forbes estimates and Guinness World Records entry. Net worth and cumulative career income are different measures.
Who is the highest-paid actress in this comparison?
Margot Robbie, with Forbes-estimated earnings of $59 million in calendar year 2023. The total was linked mainly to her acting and producing compensation from Barbie, including an estimated share of back-end profits.
Did Julia Roberts earn $54.5 million for one movie?
No. The $54.5 million was Forbes’ estimate of her earnings for its 2000 period. It included back-end earnings from Notting Hill and Runaway Bride and compensation connected with Erin Brockovich.

The figures are generally pretax estimates. Older Forbes lists usually did not deduct representation fees, while newer estimates may do so. The article identifies the relevant period and methodology where the source makes it clear.
Why are three actresses tied at $34 million or more?
Kristen Stewart, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Kidman have closely grouped peak estimates from different measurement periods: $34.5 million, $34 million and $34 million respectively. The ties reflect the reported figures, not necessarily identical careers or contracts.
Why is Jennifer Lopez missing?
Lopez’s large entertainment earnings have often come from music, touring and other activities. Forbes’ broader 2019 women-in-entertainment estimate was not an actress-only annual earnings figure, so it is not directly comparable here.
The Bottom Line
Margot Robbie’s $59 million from 2023 is the highest documented annual earnings figure in this comparison, followed by Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson at $56 million. But the ranking should not be read as a definitive list of lifetime wealth. The figures come from different eras and methodologies, and several include producing, endorsements or profit participation alongside acting.
The safest conclusion is narrower: these are 12 actresses with some of the highest publicly documented single-year entertainment earnings, based on the available Forbes reporting and the Guinness World Records record.
