Cropper’s essential instrumental calling card is “Green Onions,” the early hit that introduced Booker T. & the M.G.’s as a recording group as well as Stax’s house band. 2. “In the Midnight Hour” — Wilson Pickett
Cropper co-wrote “In the Midnight Hour” with Wilson Pickett, one of the defining Stax-era hits identified by the label. It is a clear example of Cropper’s work as a songwriter alongside his reputation as a guitarist. Stax’s biography documents the partnership.
3. “Knock on Wood” — Eddie Floyd
Cropper co-wrote “Knock on Wood” with Eddie Floyd. The credit is affirmed by Stax and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, making this one of the strongest examples of his songwriting beyond Booker T. & the M.G.’s.

4. “Soul Man” — Sam & Dave
“Soul Man” belongs on a Cropper listening list for his guitar work. The Memphis Music Hall of Fame identifies his guitar stamp on the recording; the cited profile does not establish him as a co-writer, so this guide treats it as a performance credit, not an authorship claim.
