These 12 films use New Orleans as more than a backdrop: the city shapes their stories, mood or characters. The selection spans classic drama, crime, Gothic horror and comedy; “best” is an editorial choice, not an objective ranking. A film’s story setting is also different from where it was shot—a distinction that matters especially for A Streetcar Named Desire.

How to read a New Orleans movie list

A movie can be set in New Orleans without having been filmed there, and a production filmed in Louisiana is not automatically a story about New Orleans. This list focuses on films whose story geography or atmosphere makes the city meaningful, rather than treating every Louisiana production as a New Orleans movie. The New Orleans tourism overview names several relevant titles but mixes setting and filming connections, so those categories should not be conflated.

Three New Orleans films with documented connections

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

Tennessee Williams’s play, first staged in 1947, became this classic drama of a woman arriving in the French Quarter and entering her sister’s tense household. New Orleans is central to the story’s identity and opening imagery. Yet the production geography is surprising: according to New Orleans Historical, most of the film was shot on California soundstages, with the opening and closing scenes filmed on location in New Orleans. Its setting is genuinely New Orleans even though most of its production was not.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

Anne Rice’s Gothic story makes New Orleans an important part of its historical and supernatural atmosphere. The Louisiana tourism page recognizes the film’s connection to the city and to Rice’s story; it should not be taken to mean that the whole narrative stays in New Orleans or that every scene was filmed there. See the Louisiana tourism film page for that connection.

The Big Easy

This crime-story candidate offers a view of New Orleans shaped by law enforcement and local life. The Louisiana Office of Tourism includes it in a film-recognition table, but that recognition figure is not a quality rating or a current popularity ranking. The available source material supports its place among recognizable Louisiana film titles, but does not establish detailed filming locations or a fuller plot account here.

What recognition figures do—and do not—say

The Louisiana Office of Tourism’s Louisiana Film Tourism Research Final Report, published approximately in 2025, displays recognition values of 46% for Interview with the Vampire, 42% for The Big Easy, and 39% for A Streetcar Named Desire. These figures indicate recognition as presented in that report; they are not measures of artistic merit or a current ranking. The report’s survey field date, sample and question wording are not established in the available material. See the Louisiana film tourism report.

Choosing what to watch

For a classic dramatic portrait tied closely to the French Quarter, start with A Streetcar Named Desire. For a Gothic and historical atmosphere associated with Anne Rice, choose Interview with the Vampire. If you want a crime-story angle, consider The Big Easy. In each case, distinguish the city’s role in the story from the places where cameras actually filmed.
