Because 2025 is over, this is a retrospective rather than a “so far” midyear list. The picks below balance year-end critics’ selections with a full-year review aggregator and use U.S. release eligibility where a consistent rule is available.
How this 2025 best-movies list was chosen
“Best” is a judgment, not a settled result. This selection draws on three different kinds of critical evidence: Metacritic’s weighted full-year review ranking, The Washington Post’s star-rated reviews, and individual selections by Associated Press film writers. Those lists do not produce one consensus top 12, so the order here is editorial rather than a claim that critics agree on a single ranking.

Metacritic’s full-year list covers films released from January 1 through December 31, 2025, in at least one U.S. theater or directly to streaming or VOD; it excludes shorts and reissues. It requires at least seven professional reviews and ranks titles by weighted Metascore before rounding. The page says its scores reflect January 6, 2026. See Metacritic’s 2025 movie list.
The Post’s list includes movies it reviewed in 2025 that received at least 3.5 stars from its critics and contributors; it was updated December 30, 2025. The AP article gives separate selections by Lindsey Bahr and Jake Coyle, not a composite poll. Read The Washington Post’s selections and the AP writers’ picks.

#1 Best Overall
- Runtime: 155 minutes
Release-year conventions can differ, especially for international films that premiere at festivals or open in different countries in different years. This list follows the U.S.-release framing of Metacritic’s published eligibility rule where applicable; it is a curated retrospective, not a substitute for any one outlet’s ranking.
The 12 best movies of 2025
1. One Battle After Another
Lindsey Bahr of the Associated Press ranked this film first, praising its performances and ambition. Her description of it as a farce, thriller, family drama, and buddy comedy captures its appeal to viewers who like a movie that refuses to stay in one lane. It is the list’s expansive, genre-mixing pick rather than a narrowly defined drama. Bahr’s AP selection.
2. Sinners
Bahr also selected Sinners, a blend of blues, vampires, gangsters, and musical elements. That combination makes it a natural choice for viewers looking for a genre film with a strong musical and cultural identity, rather than a conventional horror story. See the AP list.
Rank #2
- Runtime: 126 minutes
3. Marty Supreme
This ping-pong-centered story follows Marty Mauser’s drive to reach a world championship. It appears in both the AP and Washington Post selections, making it one of the clearest overlaps across the sources used here. AP critic Jake Coyle wrote, “The annals of great New York movies have a new one.” That is his opinion, not a measured critical consensus. The Post’s description and Coyle’s AP selection.

Jafar Panahi’s film, included by the AP, turns on justice, imprisonment, and uncertainty. It suits viewers drawn to morally difficult stories in which the central question is not simply what happened, but what should be done about it. Read the AP writers’ selections.
5. Sorry, Baby
Sorry, Baby led Metacritic’s midyear 2025 list as displayed on that page, with a 90 Metascore based on 20 reviews. That figure belongs to the July 1, 2025 midyear snapshot; it is not the film’s final-year position or a current full-year ranking. It remains a useful discovery point for viewers exploring the year’s earlier critical standouts. See Metacritic’s midyear list.
Rank #3
- Runtime: 93 minutes
6. Familiar Touch
Also on Metacritic’s midyear list, Familiar Touch follows an older woman’s transition to assisted living as her memory changes. The page placed it second, with an 89 Metascore, in that same midyear snapshot. Its premise points toward a more intimate, character-focused choice than the list’s larger genre hybrids. See the midyear ranking and description.
7. The Secret Agent
The Secret Agent appears in The Washington Post’s 2025 selections. Its inclusion here reflects that publication’s threshold-based list of well-reviewed films it covered during the year; it is not presented as a universal ranking. Read the Post’s list.

8. Left-Handed Girl
Another Washington Post selection, Left-Handed Girl adds a distinct title to a list that otherwise includes very different kinds of films. The Post’s presence on this list signals that its critics and contributors awarded the film at least 3.5 stars. See the Post’s 2025 selections.
Rank #4

9. On Becoming a Guinea Fowl
This title appears on Metacritic’s midyear movie page. That page noted a rent-or-buy option through Prime Video and other stores at the time it was published, but it does not establish current availability or availability in every country. Check a local retailer or streaming guide for the exact title and your territory. Metacritic’s midyear entry.
10–12. Other films on the full-year and critics’ lists
The full-year Metacritic ranking and the AP and Washington Post year-end selections contain additional eligible films, but their approaches differ: a weighted review score, a publication’s star threshold, and two writers’ individual choices are not interchangeable. Rather than imply that the evidence establishes three further titles in a precise shared order, use the linked full-year and year-end lists to explore their remaining selections. The twelve-film selection here is intended as a useful starting point, not a claim that all sources name exactly the same twelve.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why midyear rankings differ from year-end lists
A July list can only reflect films and reviews available by its cutoff. Metacritic’s July 1 page placed Sorry, Baby and Familiar Touch first and second in its midyear snapshot; those positions should not be quoted as their final-year placements. Its separate full-year list applies a defined U.S. release window and a minimum review count, while the Post and AP use their own editorial selection methods.

Rotten Tomatoes’ Certified Fresh guide is another discovery source, but it is dynamic and includes some films labeled with years other than 2025. Its page was updated February 18, 2026, so it should not by itself establish strict 2025 eligibility. View Rotten Tomatoes’ guide.
Where to watch these movies
Streaming, rental, and purchase availability changes over time and varies by country. The sources cited here do not establish current viewing options for most of these films. Search the exact title in a streaming guide or digital storefront available in your territory before subscribing or renting; a historical listing is not a guarantee that a film remains available.
