TechRadar TV hardware staff writer James Davidson selected these 12 favorites from discs he tested in 2025. His descriptions point to different strengths: vivid color, black-and-white detail, spatial effects and music-led Dolby Atmos sound. They are personal recommendations, not results from a standardized comparison.
Choose by what the recipient enjoys seeing or hearing
Davidson says 4K Blu-ray is a regular source in his TV and soundbar testing. That makes his list useful as a set of viewing and listening suggestions, but his image and sound judgments should be read as his own observations rather than independently verified rankings.
- For black-and-white photography: Double Indemnity and Seven Samurai.
- For vivid color: The Mask and Edward Scissorhands.
- For music and Dolby Atmos: Wicked and The Sound of Music.
- For a spatial-effects showcase: Sinners, especially the barn scene Davidson describes.
The 12 discs Davidson recommends
1. The Mask — Arrow Video Limited Edition
Davidson highlights its superb color reproduction, making this a pick for someone who enjoys bright, vivid images. The recommendation refers specifically to Arrow Video’s Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray; check that the edition on sale matches before buying.
2. Double Indemnity — The Criterion Collection
Davidson says the film’s textures benefit from a real visual upgrade. It is his example of how a 4K presentation can draw attention to the image of an older film, and a strong choice for a fan of classic noir.

A 4K Blu-ray disc requires a compatible 4K Blu-ray player to play at its intended 4K resolution. If you are unsure what the recipient owns, check their player or ask before choosing a disc. Disc editions can also bundle Blu-ray or digital formats, but those additions do not make a 4K disc playable in a standard Blu-ray player.
TechRadar’s related player guide named the Panasonic DP-UB820 as its overall pick, Sony UBP-X700 as its budget pick and Panasonic DP-UB9000 as its premium pick at the time of that guide. Those are dated recommendations, not confirmation of current stock or model status; verify present availability, region compatibility and the recipient’s setup before purchasing a player.
