Bob Belcher takes the top spot in this ranking of cartoon dads, with Stan Smith at the bottom. The list includes biological fathers as well as a surrogate father figure and a temporary father figure, so it is not a comparison of biological parents alone. Its order is an editorial judgment—not an objective score or a consensus.
How this ranking judges a cartoon dad
A good cartoon dad should show affection and emotional support, provide reliable day-to-day care, respect a child’s growing independence, make sound choices about safety, and take responsibility after mistakes. Comedy, satire, and fantasy complicate those measures: an outrageous gag or a dangerous plot may be part of a show’s premise, but it still matters when considering how a parent’s choices affect the family.
The ranking follows the sequence of Gizmodo’s “11 Cartoon Dads, Ranked,” published May 8, 2020. The #4/5 entry is George and Lance together, as in that list; it is one paired entry, not two separately scored positions. Alfred Pennyworth is included as a surrogate father figure to Bruce Wayne, and Peter Parker as a father figure to Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Those relationships do not make them equivalent to biological parents, but they do make them relevant to a broad question about fatherhood in animation.

#11: Stan Smith (American Dad!)
Stan’s place at the bottom reflects the clearest serious concern in this ranking: his actions can put family members in danger. That risk weighs heavily against affection or good intentions when judging a parent’s safety and judgment. The placement is an editorial assessment of a fictional character, not a claim that every part of his parenting is defined by that failure.

#10: Tony Park (We Bare Bears)
Tony lands near the bottom of this particular list, but the available rationale does not establish a detailed case against him on each of the ranking’s criteria. His position should be read as one outlet’s opinion rather than a measured finding about his parenting.
-
#9: Bill Green (Big City Greens)
Bill appears above Tony and below the middle of the list. The ranking offers no quantified score for that difference, and a numbered placement alone cannot show how much better one father is than another. It is a comparative editorial judgment, not a universal verdict.

#8: Peter Parker (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)
Peter is included in a father-figure role to Miles Morales, rather than as Miles’s biological father. That distinction matters: his place recognizes temporary guidance and support, while making clear that the relationship is not the same as ongoing parental responsibility.
-
#7: Alfred Pennyworth (Harley Quinn)
Alfred is another non-biological entry, included as a surrogate father figure to Bruce Wayne. His presence broadens the list beyond biological dads, but a ranking that mixes parents and mentors necessarily compares different kinds of care and responsibility.

#6: Greg Universe (Steven Universe)
Greg sits just outside the top five in Gizmodo’s order. The position reflects the list’s overall judgment across qualities such as affection, availability, practical care, trust, and support for a child’s independence; it is not a published score for any one trait.
-
#4/5: George and Lance (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)
George and Lance share the paired #4/5 placement. Keeping them together preserves the original list’s structure; splitting the pair into two ranked entries would change the count and imply separate placements the list did not make.
-
#3: Duane Williams (Craig of the Creek)
Duane reaches the top three in this editorial ranking. The list’s stated values include being available, offering practical care, and supporting a child’s independence, but the placement is still a critic’s judgment rather than proof of a definitive order.
-
#2: Lio Oak (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts)
Lio takes second place. As with the other high-ranked characters, the ranking favors a blend of love, trust, support, and showing up for a child; those are useful standards for discussing fictional parents, not a reproducible measurement.

#1: Bob Belcher (Bob’s Burgers)
Bob is Gizmodo’s top pick, a choice that places him above the other fathers on the list under its mix of care, support, and respect for children’s independence. That makes him the winner of this particular ranking—not the uncontested best cartoon dad.
Why another list might choose a different dad
“Best cartoon dad” depends on what counts as a dad and which qualities matter most. WatchMojo’s separate top-ten ranking, for example, puts Bob Belcher at #10 and Homer Simpson at #1, and includes Fred Flintstone, Peter Griffin, George Jetson, and Hank Hill. The difference is a reminder that these lists express different editorial choices; neither establishes a consensus or an objective ranking.
A reader who prioritizes safety and reliability may judge a character differently from one who values comic energy, affection, or a memorable story arc. It also matters whether a list compares only biological parents or includes mentors and surrogate caregivers. Making those criteria explicit is more useful than treating a numbered list as a final answer to who is the greatest cartoon dad.
