Sexuality in horror can mean queer characters and relationships, coded desire, sexual agency, or erotic imagery turned into danger or transformation. The films below are ranked by editorial judgment, not by an objectively agreed canon. They show how the genre’s treatment of sexuality ranges from suggestive metaphor shaped by censorship to explicit desire and bodily change.

How these films approach sexuality

This selection includes queer identity and subtext, women’s desire, sexual compulsion, and sexuality bound up with threat or transformation. Those are different subjects, not interchangeable versions of one experience. In older films, censorship and social convention could push queer themes into suggestion or metaphor; later works could address desire more directly. A suggestive reading of a classic is an interpretation, not necessarily an explicit statement by the film.

Lesbian-vampire films are a recurring strand of horror, but erotic imagery is not automatically affirming representation. The British Film Institute (BFI) notes that many examples were made for a straight male audience, a context that matters when considering how a film frames its women characters.

The 11 films, ranked

1. The Mark of Lilith (1986)

BFI National Archive programme notes describe Zena, a Black lesbian film researcher, meeting Lillia, a white bisexual vampire. The filmmakers saw the vampire form as a way to address sexuality, race, and gender, calling it open to “lesbian feminist subversion” and able to incorporate ideas of “the Other.” That combination gives the film a particularly direct engagement with both queer representation and the conventions of vampire horror.

2. Dracula’s Daughter (1936)

The BFI discusses the countess’s encounter with a female model alongside the film’s theme of concealing the self to meet social expectations. Its place in this ranking rests on that tension: desire and identity appear through a story shaped by the limits of what a film of its era could state openly.

3. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

The BFI reads the creature’s rejection and his relationship with a blind man as part of the film’s queer metaphor. Those are interpretive readings rather than an explicit declaration of the creature’s sexuality. They make the film an example of horror using alienation and the desire for connection to invite meanings beyond its surface plot.

4. The Hunger (1983)

The BFI names this vampire film as an influence on The Mark of Lilith. That documented connection places it within the lineage of vampire horror that later filmmakers could draw on for explorations of sexuality. Its position here reflects that influence; the available source does not provide a fuller account of the film’s sexual themes.

5. Daughters of Darkness (1971)

The BFI places Daughters of Darkness in the lesbian-vampire tradition and connects it to the Countess Báthory legend. That tradition makes it a key film for considering how horror has used female desire and vampirism together. Its erotic treatment should also be viewed in light of the BFI’s caution that many films in this cycle were made for a straight male audience.

6. The Vampire Lovers (1970)

The BFI also identifies The Vampire Lovers as part of lesbian-vampire cinema. The film belongs to a recurring horror mode in which female desire is entangled with predation and supernatural threat. That combination can make the depiction provocative without making it straightforwardly affirming.

7. Jack & Diane (2012)

The BFI describes this as a young romance threatened by a werewolf transformation. Here, the supernatural change puts pressure on an intimate relationship, making bodily transformation part of the film’s account of desire and connection.

8. Magic Cottage (1993)

BFI Archive notes describe a man becoming subject to a powerful sexual compulsion. That premise puts sexual desire at the center of the horror, but as an overpowering force rather than uncomplicated freedom or pleasure.

9. Midsommar (2019)

TIME describes the film’s ritualized sex scene as part of its sexual provocation. The scene places sexuality within a ritual context, making it a source of unease as well as an element of the film’s horror.

10. Titane (2021)

TIME describes Titane as body horror built around sex with a car and the resulting pregnancy. Its premise takes sexuality into deliberately radical territory, using bodily change to unsettle familiar boundaries between desire, identity, and the human body.

11. The Old Dark House (1932)

The BFI notes a suggested homosexual relationship and identifies an early example of a woman playing a male role. These details make the film notable for queer suggestion and gender presentation in an era when explicit treatment of such subjects was constrained.

What the ranking reveals

These films do not offer one settled version of sexuality in horror. Some approach queer desire through suggestion or metaphor; others make desire, compulsion, or sexual provocation central to the premise. Transformation can signal isolation, threaten a relationship, or unsettle the body itself. The ranking favors films in which sexuality is closely bound to the horror, while recognizing that context—including censorship and the intended audience—changes how a depiction reads.
