Experts quoted in coverage disagree less about a proven outcome than about the scenario itself: one predicts a gorilla victory; another says a real gorilla would likely leave.
Why there is no definitive answer
No controlled evidence establishes how this imagined fight would end. The question leaves key details undefined: who the people are, what the setting is, whether the gorilla can flee, how the group behaves, and whether “winning” means killing, incapacitating, or simply driving the other side away. Different assumptions produce different scenarios, not a scientific result.
That matters because the meme turns a real animal into a combatant following human rules. A forced fight and an encounter in which an animal can retreat are not the same question.
What the experts quoted in coverage say
Giles Clarke: a prediction about the hypothetical
Giles Clarke, a wildlife expert and trustee of The Gorilla Organization, was asked who would win. The organization quotes his answer: “The gorilla would absolutely wreck one hundred men.” That is Clarke’s opinion about the thought experiment, not the result of a measured contest. The Gorilla Organization’s article also uses the question to draw attention to real conservation concerns.

Michael Stern: a real gorilla might avoid the fight
In a separate interview, primatologist Michael Stern argued that an actual gorilla would likely recognize it was outnumbered and leave. That view focuses on animal behavior rather than on who would prevail in a forced brawl. The interview reports his reasoning indirectly; it should not be treated as a verbatim quotation. TMZ’s interview presents this perspective.
These are two expert framings, not a settled verdict. Clarke answers the imagined contest; Stern questions whether a real animal would take part in one at all.

What the meme misses about gorillas
The Gorilla Organization describes gorillas as intelligent and emotionally complex, and says they are “typically quiet, shy and unaggressive, unless provoked.” That is a more useful starting point than treating them as eager opponents. A hypothetical fight strips away the animal’s ordinary behavior and the possibility of avoidance. The organization’s account connects the viral question to the real risks faced by gorillas and rangers in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
How the debate became a recurring internet question
The question is a satirical internet thought experiment. A known Reddit appearance dates to 2020, and coverage describes renewed attention in 2025. Those dates document an appearance and a resurgence; they do not establish who first posed the question or exactly when it first went viral. The available timeline overview is tertiary, so it is best read cautiously.

- Forced fight or real encounter? A forced contest assumes behavior that Stern’s account suggests a real gorilla might not choose.
- Can the gorilla leave? Escape changes the question from combat to whether an encounter happens at all.
- Do the people cooperate? The prompt does not specify how 100 individuals would coordinate, so assuming perfect teamwork adds a rule rather than resolving the debate.
- What counts as winning? Defeating, escaping, or causing the other side to retreat are different outcomes.
These distinctions clarify why people reach different answers; they do not create a scientifically validated prediction.
