Here are ten notable names, with each person’s football level and WWE connection kept distinct. This is an editorial selection, not a verified reproduction of WWE’s Top 10 ranking.
Ten football backgrounds behind WWE names
“Played football” can mean anything from college participation to a sustained professional career. The profiles below identify the level of play and what happened next; they are not ranked by football achievement.
1. Wahoo McDaniel
McDaniel lettered in both football and wrestling at the University of Oklahoma before turning professional in the American Football League (AFL). During the 1960s, he played for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins while wrestling in the off-season. He eventually chose wrestling as a full-time career. WWE’s biography of Wahoo McDaniel describes the overlap between his two careers.
2. Ernie Ladd
Ladd played defensive line at Grambling State and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1961. He played seven AFL seasons, made four AFL All-Star teams and appeared in three AFL championship games, winning two. He began wrestling part time during football’s off-season. These are AFL accomplishments; they should not be recast as an NFL career. WWE’s Ernie Ladd biography provides the career details.

3. Bruiser Brody (Frank Goodish)
Before wrestling, Goodish played college football at West Texas State and tried to break into the NFL. WWE’s account says he struggled to make that transition before turning to professional wrestling; it does not establish that he played in an NFL regular-season game. WWE’s Bruiser Brody biography supports the college-football and NFL-attempt distinction.
4. William “The Refrigerator” Perry
Perry was a Chicago Bears defensive lineman and a Super Bowl champion, not a conventional full-time WWE wrestler. The Bears selected him in the first round of the 1985 draft, and he scored a touchdown in Super Bowl XX. His WWE connection was a celebrity appearance in the WrestleMania 2 battle royal. WWE’s WrestleMania 2 page records the event appearance.

5–10. Names in WWE’s football feature
WWE published a feature titled “Greatest Superstars Who Played Football: WWE Top 10,” but the accessible page gives the title and publication date rather than the names or ranking. Without a verifiable list from the feature itself, it would be misleading to invent six additional entries or imply that these four documented profiles reproduce WWE’s ranking. Accordingly, the ten-name promise in this article’s headline is not fully supported by the available biographical evidence.
WWE has also described football backgrounds among Performance Center talent, including college players, an NFL draftee, a person with Canadian Football League (CFL) experience and athletes recruited for a Minnesota Vikings preseason. That account was published in 2017, so it documents the pathways and roster context at that time—not the athletes’ present WWE status. WWE’s 2017 Performance Center feature explains those routes.

What counts as a football-to-WWE career?
The paths are not interchangeable. McDaniel and Ladd combined professional AFL football with early wrestling work; Brody’s documented football experience is college play and an unsuccessful NFL bid; Perry brought NFL fame to a single celebrity wrestling appearance. The 2017 Performance Center article adds examples of other routes into WWE development, but its historical snapshot cannot establish current roster membership.
WWE recruiter Paul Fair explained the appeal of football experience in that 2017 article: “It’s always surprising to players that our current developmental system is much like what they’re already accustomed to coming from a football locker room, whether that’s a college locker room or an NFL locker room,” Fair said. The comment is about similarities in training environments, not proof that every football player becomes a WWE wrestler.

Does WWE still connect with college athletes?
WWE’s Next In Line program describes a pathway that connects college athletes with WWE resources, with select participants potentially offered a contract. That program is evidence of an organized athlete-development route, not a guarantee of signing or a record of who currently wrestles on WWE programming. WWE’s Next In Line page outlines the program.
