These ten independent films from 2022 offer distinctive perspectives, unusual forms and stories that deserve a place on more watchlists. “Underrated” is a matter of judgment, not a measurable status: The Film Stage noted that what counts as overlooked depends on the criteria, and its own year-end feature gathered 50 narrative films it felt had missed wider attention. This is a curated, unranked selection, chosen for its mix of countries, genres, tones and filmmaking approaches—not a claim that every film was ignored or hard to find.

The African Desperate
Martine Syms brings a sharp contemporary perspective to the art world and graduate-school life. This is a choice for viewers interested in a distinctive point of view on the pressures and absurdities of creative institutions.
All My Friends Hate Me
Andrew Gaynord turns a reunion with old friends into uncomfortable comedy shaped by social anxiety. Look here for a film that makes awkwardness—not a conventional mystery or broad gag—the engine of its tension.
#1 Best Overall
The Girl and the Spider
Ramon and Silvan Zürcher approach friendship, rivalry, tension and memory through a formally unusual story. Its appeal is less about plot momentum than the precise, unsettled way it studies relationships.
Girl Picture
Alli Haapasalo’s Finnish coming-of-age film follows three young women across three Fridays. The structure gives the story a focused rhythm while making room for changing friendships, desires and expectations.
A Night of Knowing Nothing
Payal Kapadia blends experimental documentary and fiction in a work that joins a love story to student protest and political context in India. It is the most direct documentary-facing choice here for viewers drawn to films that blur personal experience and public events.
Please Baby Please
Amanda Kramer uses camp musical styling to explore gender roles. Its heightened approach makes it a natural pick for viewers seeking queer cinema that leans into performance and artifice rather than realism.

Strawberry Mansion
Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney make a surreal, handmade science-fiction romance. The film is a vivid example of how independent filmmaking can turn limited means into a source of imaginative texture.
The Tale of King Crab
Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis shape a fable-like story that moves from a 19th-century setting toward distant landscapes. Choose it for a slower, folkloric alternative to contemporary realist drama.

Wood and Water
Jonas Bak’s quiet film links Germany’s Black Forest with Hong Kong Island through a story of transition. Its patient mood and geographic movement make it a good fit for viewers who value atmosphere and observation over plot-heavy storytelling.
Zero Fucks Given
Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre cast Adèle Exarchopoulos as a flight attendant in a film about repetitive work and millennial uncertainty. The occupational setting gives the story a distinctive lens on routine and instability.

What makes these films “underrated”?
There is no universal measure of an underrated film. The Film Stage’s December 2022 feature described its aim as drawing attention to narrative films that had largely missed year-end conversations, while acknowledging that the category changes with the criteria. This list uses a similar discovery-minded approach: it favors films whose craft, perspective or audience appeal make them worth seeking out, without treating low visibility as proof of low quality or weak releases.
Recognition also exists on a spectrum. Aftersun, for example, was not an obscure title by the end of 2022: according to the British Film Institute, it won best British independent film at the 2022 British Independent Film Awards, and Charlotte Wells received awards for director, debut director and screenplay. That distinction is useful: a film can be critically recognized and still feel underwatched to some audiences, but this selection focuses on less routinely encountered discoveries rather than claiming that every notable indie was overlooked.
How to choose what to watch first
- For comedy and social discomfort: try All My Friends Hate Me.
- For coming-of-age stories: start with Girl Picture.
- For documentary and politics: choose A Night of Knowing Nothing.
- For surreal or handmade filmmaking: pick Strawberry Mansion.
- For quiet, observational storytelling: consider Wood and Water.
Festival programming can be another useful discovery route. Raindance’s 2022 hidden-gems selection included Falcon Lake and Gentle, while Tribeca’s 2022 lineup featured films including January, A Love Song, Mars One and Taurus. Those selections provide festival context, not proof by themselves that a film is underrated.
Where to watch these 2022 indie films
Streaming catalogs and distribution rights change by country and over time, and the sources cited here do not establish current availability for these ten films. Check a local streaming search service, rental store or library catalog for the title in your region rather than relying on an old festival or release announcement. The Film Stage’s January 2023 article identified some festival films as still seeking U.S. distribution at that time; that is historical context, not a current availability guide.
