They range from historical surveys and focused case films to government-investigation coverage and skeptical or advocacy-led perspectives. Treat witness accounts as testimony, filmmakers’ interpretations as arguments, and independently verified findings as a separate matter.
How to choose a UFO documentary
Start with the kind of viewing experience you want: a broad history, a close look at one reported incident, institutional investigations, or a film that argues for a particular way of interpreting UFO claims. The titles below are grouped by their main appeal rather than scored against one another; recommendation lists differ in scope and do not establish a universal top ten.
Broad historical surveys and investigations
The Phenomenon (2020)
James Fox’s documentary offers a broad historical overview through interviews with witnesses and officials. Apple TV lists its runtime as 1 hour 40 minutes. The platform’s description uses promotional language such as “most credible”; that wording is not an independent finding about the evidence. Check Apple TV’s listing.
Out of the Blue (2003)
This older survey is a useful pick for viewers who want a historical overview of prominent UFO reports. Its age also makes it an opportunity to see how earlier documentary coverage framed the subject, rather than a substitute for checking later developments.

UFOs: Investigating the Unknown (2023 series)
National Geographic describes this series as examining government investigations and cases, including Project Blue Book. Its multi-episode format gives it room to follow institutional history across more than a single feature-length film. See National Geographic’s series page. Disney+ also has a catalog entry, but whether the series is available to watch depends on the viewer’s region and current rights.
Films focused on particular cases
Ariel Phenomenon (2022)
Randall Nickerson’s film revisits the 1994 Ariel School incident in Zimbabwe and follows people connected to the story. That focus makes it a case-centered choice rather than a general history of UFO reports. Entertainment Weekly placed it first in a ten-best UFO documentaries roundup, a ranking that should be attributed to that publication rather than treated as a universal verdict. Visit the film’s official page.
Moment of Contact (2022)
James Fox’s documentary examines reports connected to the Varginha case in Brazil. Its extraordinary elements should be understood as reported claims and accounts, not settled fact; watch it as an exploration of a case and the people associated with it.
I Know What I Saw (2009)
This witness-centered documentary is suited to viewers interested in testimony and reported encounters. Testimony can be compelling and worth examining, but a film centered on witnesses is not, by itself, a conclusive scientific determination of what they observed.
Films about competing interpretations
Mirage Men
Mirage Men advances an argument about UFO narratives and the influence of intelligence activity and disinformation. It is a distinctive interpretive lens; the film’s thesis should not be conflated with independently confirmed conclusions.
The UFO Movie They Don’t Want You to See
This explanatory, skeptical-minded title offers one approach to evaluating UFO claims. It can provide a useful counterpoint to films built around witness accounts or advocacy, without being treated as the final word on the topic.
Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind: Contact Has Begun (2020)
This film presents Steven Greer’s claims and approach to contact. It is best watched with its point of view in mind: the claims belong to the film’s perspective and should not be presented as established science.

Where to watch
Streaming availability is not uniform across countries and can change as licensing changes. A platform catalog entry establishes that a title is listed there, not that every viewer can stream it now. Check the service’s current catalog for your region before planning a watch, and confirm the exact title and edition when multiple listings appear.
