There is no official national ranking of the best chefs in the United States. This editorial selection uses the 2026 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Award winners as a current starting point, then applies a simple rule: include the Outstanding Chef and Emerging Chef winners, and select eight regional Best Chef winners to represent a range of places and culinary perspectives. The order is not a ranking.
The Foundation announced its 2026 winners on June 15, 2026. Its awards recognize different kinds of achievement; they do not establish that one regional winner is better than another or prove a restaurant’s current quality. The ten names below are therefore a transparent, award-led selection—not an authoritative verdict on every chef in the country.
How this selection was made
The James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Chef criterion describes “A chef who sets high culinary standards and has served as a positive example for other food professionals.” Its Emerging Chef and regional Best Chef awards recognize distinct categories of achievement. None is a national ranking formula. This list gives the two national-category winners a place, then draws eight chefs from the 12 regional winners to reflect geographic range. The choices among those regional winners are editorial, not a comparison of their skill or influence.
The Foundation’s 2026 Restaurant and Chef Award winners are the source for the award categories, names, restaurants, and locations below. Affiliations can change, so the restaurant and role are identified as reported for the awards rather than guaranteed as current beyond the announcement.

Michael Tusk — Outstanding Chef
Tusk, of Quince in San Francisco, won the Foundation’s 2026 Outstanding Chef award. This category recognizes a chef’s standards and example to other food professionals; it is not a claim that the winner is objectively the country’s number-one chef.

Adrian Torres — Emerging Chef
Torres, of Maximo in West University Place, Texas, won the 2026 Emerging Chef award. This is a separate category from Outstanding Chef and the regional Best Chef awards, so it should be read as recognition of emerging talent rather than a placement on a shared national scale.

Dave Beran — Best Chef: California
Beran was the 2026 winner for California. His regional award adds a West Coast perspective to this selection.

Ito won the 2026 Mid-Atlantic award, bringing a regional winner from outside the West Coast and Texas into the list.

Sarah Thompson — Best Chef: Southwest
Thompson won the 2026 Southwest award. Her inclusion completes a list spanning national categories and several regions of the United States.
What the list can—and cannot—tell you
A James Beard win is a useful signal of professional recognition, but the categories are designed to recognize different roles and regions. The 2026 awards also named regional Best Chef winners Jacob Potashnick (Great Lakes), Loryn Nalic (Midwest), Taylor Montgomery (Southeast), and Evelyn Garcia and Henry Lu (Texas). Their absence from this ten-name editorial selection is not a judgment against them; ten places cannot include every winner.
The awards alone do not provide comparable measures of a chef’s career longevity, restaurant quality, public reputation, or influence. For example, the Foundation’s 2026 profile of Nancy Silverton describes a career spanning more than four decades and notes her 2014 Outstanding Chef award, but that biographical context is not a metric that can be fairly compared with the 2026 winners. A reader looking for a definitive ranking would need a stated basis for comparison and evidence beyond these awards.

Why there is no official “top ten”
The Foundation’s criteria distinguish Outstanding Chef’s standard-setting and mentoring role from Best Chef’s regional recognition. The 2026 results include one Outstanding Chef, one Emerging Chef, and 12 regional Best Chef winners—not a single ballot ordering all chefs in the country. Treating those categories as a numbered national leaderboard would misrepresent what the awards say.
For a broader view, the 2025 Outstanding Chef winner was Jungsik Yim, while the regional winners included Jon Yao, Noah Sandoval, Carlos Delgado, Karyn Tomlinson, Salvador Alamilla, Vijay Kumar, Sky Haneul Kim, Timothy Wastell, Nando Chang, Jake Howell, Yotaka Martin, and Thomas Bille. Those prior-year awards are historical context, not current 2026 wins or proof of current restaurant status.
