His career has since moved between live-action comedy, animation, writing, producing and podcasting. Here are 10 lesser-known details about how that range took shape—and what Arnett says he brings to some of his best-known characters.
1. Toronto was home before Hollywood
The Television Academy lists Toronto, Ontario, as Arnett’s birthplace, and he told The Guardian that he grew up there. His path into American television began far from the Hollywood image often associated with his career.

2. He found his breakthrough later than many actors
Arnett told The Guardian in 2022 that he did not break through until he was almost 33. Before Mitch Hurwitz cast him as Gob Bluth on Arrested Development, he had endured years of false starts. The timing makes his eventual signature role a less conventional late-career arrival than a quick launch into fame.
3. He studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute
Before becoming widely associated with comedy, Arnett trained at the Lee Strasberg Institute, as The Guardian reported. That is a different route from the sketch-comedy pipeline many performers use to build a public profile. His later work has leaned heavily on comic timing, but his foundation included formal acting study.

4. Gob’s bravado had hurt underneath it
Gob’s grand entrances, failed tricks and confidence far in excess of his abilities are easy to remember. Arnett has said there was a more vulnerable idea beneath that performance: Gob was a man who did not feel loved by his father. In a 2025 interview with The Daily Beast, he called that lack of paternal love the thing that drove his interpretation. The hurt is Arnett’s way of understanding the character, not a claim that Gob’s behavior is excused by it.
5. He distinguishes Gob from BoJack by self-awareness
Arnett has described Gob and BoJack Horseman as very different kinds of damaged comic characters. In a 2020 conversation with The Ringer, he characterized Gob as ego-driven and detached from reality, while BoJack is aware of himself even as he keeps acting destructively. That contrast is Arnett’s reading of the roles, not a clinical diagnosis: one character largely barrels ahead without insight, while the other can recognize his faults without reliably changing course.

6. He treats interpretation as part of the job
Arnett has emphasized that an actor’s performance serves the story the creators are telling. Discussing BoJack Horseman, he told The Ringer, “And my job was really just being sensitive to what story he was trying to tell.” He was referring to creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg; elsewhere, Arnett has also credited Mitch Hurwitz’s storytelling on Arrested Development. The approach helps explain why his characters can be vivid without seeming disconnected from the larger work around them.
7. His voice career goes far beyond BoJack
Arnett’s distinctive voice is associated with the self-destructive animated horse, but it has served many other projects. Institutional biographies from the Television Academy and Canada’s Walk of Fame list roles in animated films including LEGO Batman, Monsters vs. Aliens, Horton Hears a Who! and Ice Age 2: The Meltdown. The Television Academy also notes his voice work for GMC Trucks commercials. The range spans movie characters and advertising, not just television animation.

8. He has worked behind the camera as well as in front of it
Arnett’s credits include writing and producing, not only acting. The Television Academy says he wrote for Running Wilde and co-formed the production company DumbDumb with Jason Bateman. Canada’s Walk of Fame credits him with co-creating, co-writing and executive-producing Flaked, and says he launched the production company Electric Avenue in 2014. Those roles put him on the creative and business side of projects as well as in the cast.
9. He co-hosts SmartLess with Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes
Arnett is one of the hosts of the podcast SmartLess, alongside Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes, according to a November 2025 GQ profile. The three-host format adds another kind of performance to his portfolio: conversation and comic chemistry outside scripted roles.

10. A recent dramatic performance was grounded, but not autobiographical
In discussing Is This Thing On?, Arnett described trying to make the film’s emotional moments feel authentic and less heightened than some of his comic work. The story was inspired by comedian John Bishop’s experience, not Arnett’s biography. He told The Daily Beast: “This film is inspired by him; it’s not necessarily the John Bishop story. And it’s certainly not autobiographical; it’s not the Will Arnett story.” The distinction matters: Arnett drew on his own life as an actor approaching a performance, but the film’s story is not presented as his own.
