Wendi Richter became one of WWE’s most visible women’s champions during the Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection, then left the company after a disputed title loss in 1985. Here are 10 key points about her career, the major matches, and what participants later said about the controversial finish.
1. Richter was a two-time Women’s Champion
WWE identifies Richter as a two-time Women’s Champion and a 2010 WWE Hall of Fame inductee. Those credentials frame a career that reached beyond the title record: her matches became part of a period when women’s wrestling was presented to a much larger popular audience. WWE’s profile of Wendi Richter provides the company’s account of her career.
2. She arrived in WWE in late 1983
WWE dates Richter’s rise in the company to the latter part of 1983. Her arrival came as WWE was building a connection between professional wrestling and mainstream entertainment, a strategy that shaped the next two years of her career.
3. Cyndi Lauper helped bring her story into popular culture
Richter’s rise was linked to singer Cyndi Lauper through WWE’s Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection. Lauper’s involvement helped give Richter’s feud with Fabulous Moolah a pop-culture setting beyond the usual wrestling audience. WWE describes Richter as instrumental to this connection, though that is the company’s assessment of her cultural significance.

4. She beat Fabulous Moolah on The Brawl to End It All
On July 23, 1984, Richter defeated Fabulous Moolah to win the Women’s Championship. WWE’s historical account identifies the bout as the title change that made Richter champion. WWE’s history of the Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection records the match and its place in the period.
5. The match joined WWE and MTV
The Brawl to End It All was presented by WWE and MTV, making the title match a prominent example of wrestling’s partnership with a music television channel. WWE treats the event as a signature moment in the Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection. No directly attributable audience-rating figure is established in the sources cited here, so the event’s significance is better described through its format and role in that partnership than through an unsourced statistic.
6. Leilani Kai briefly took the title in 1985
Richter’s first championship reign ended when Leilani Kai defeated her at MTV’s War to Settle the Score on February 18, 1985. WWE’s chronology records Kai’s title win at the event, setting up a rematch on a much larger stage.
7. Richter regained the championship at WrestleMania I
On March 31, 1985, Richter defeated Kai at the first WrestleMania to regain the Women’s Championship. The title change linked her story to WWE’s new flagship event and restored her as champion after Kai’s brief reign.

8. Her 1985 departure is remembered as the “Original Screwjob”
On November 25, 1985, Richter wrestled under a disguise as The Spider Lady and lost the Women’s Championship to Fabulous Moolah. A 2015 CBS Sports oral history identifies Moolah as the person beneath the Spider Lady disguise and recounts the disputed finish. The episode is commonly remembered as the “Original Screwjob,” but the match result and later accounts of what Richter knew or what the referee was told are distinct matters.
9. Richter and Tony Atlas described the finish as a fast count
In the CBS Sports oral history, Richter recalled that she lifted her shoulders after the first count but the referee continued the count to three: “At the count of one, I lifted my shoulders and the referee went two, three, and that was it.” That is Richter’s retrospective account of the finish.

Tony Atlas, who said he was present, gave his recollection this way: “I was there when they took the belt off her. They screwed her. She didn’t even know she was gonna lose the belt.” Atlas’s statement is also participant testimony, not an independent adjudication of the referee’s instructions, contract discussions, or intent.

WWE says Richter was instrumental in the Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection and that the period helped pave the way for later female competitors. Her title matches with Moolah and Kai, her appearances at MTV-linked events, and her WrestleMania I win show why WWE places her in that story. The claim about her broader influence is WWE’s interpretation of the era, rather than a measured statistic.
