Spike Dudley was more than the undersized wrestler being hurled into an ECW crowd. The character—played by Matt Hyson—was built around an unyielding underdog, and his ECW story included a victory over Bam Bam Bigelow and a shot at the promotion’s world title. Here are 10 details that put the famous moments in context.
How Matt Hyson became Spike Dudley
1. Spike Dudley was Matt Hyson’s wrestling character
Spike Dudley was the ring name of Matt Hyson. In a WWE retrospective interview, Hyson recalled growing up watching wrestling in Providence, Rhode Island. His route to ECW began on the California independent scene, where he often faced much larger opponents.

2. The size mismatch became the character’s hook
Those matches gave Hyson a natural underdog story: a smaller wrestler taking on bigger rivals. WWE describes the appeal as a “David vs. Goliath” dynamic. The size difference mattered, but it was the decision to keep fighting that made the character compelling.
3. Tazz helped bring Hyson east
Tazz, then associated with ECW’s House of Hardcore training school, saw Hyson’s highlight reel and invited him to come east. Hyson recalled making the journey from California to the East Coast in a Toyota Tercel in less than 48 hours. He settled on Long Island in 1996 to train at the school.

4. Spike was shaped by more than one person
Hyson credited Tazz, Tommy Dreamer and Paul Heyman with helping develop the Spike persona. His assignment was to be “a little maniac who wouldn’t back down from anyone,” as Hyson put it in the WWE interview. That brief explains why Spike’s appeal went beyond taking punishment: he made defiance the point.
5. The Dudley family was part of the on-screen story
Spike entered ECW as part of the Dudley family storyline, with Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley presented as his brothers. That connection placed the smaller newcomer inside one of the promotion’s most recognizable acts while giving him a distinct role as its seemingly least imposing member.

6. Bam Bam Bigelow really did throw Spike into the crowd
The famous sequence happened: Bam Bam Bigelow tossed Spike into the audience, where fans passed him overhead. It became one of ECW’s enduring images, but the image can eclipse the match result.

7. Spike also beat Bigelow
Hyson’s correction is the detail many fans miss: “Everybody remembers the throw, but nobody remembers that I beat the monstrous Bam Bam Bigelow.” The crowd-surfing spectacle was memorable, but Spike was not simply a prop in Bigelow’s performance; he also earned the victory.
8. Spike challenged for ECW’s World Title
WWE’s retrospective says Hyson challenged Mike Awesome for the ECW World Title on pay-per-view. He did not win the championship, but reaching that match shows how far the underdog role had developed beyond a single stunt or a string of painful bumps.
9. ECW’s closure brought the run to an end
ECW closed in early 2001. Hyson told WWE, “I didn’t think it was ever going to end.” The promotion’s closure ended his ECW chapter, rather than a tidy planned departure from the company he had joined as a young wrestler.

10. Hyson was in WWE by March 2001
WWE says Hyson joined the company by March 2001. In the retrospective, he said the move surprised him because he had not actively pursued the job. The quick transition followed ECW’s closure, but it does not by itself establish the rest of his career chronology.
