Before he became The Undertaker, Mark Calaway wrestled in WCW as Mean Mark Callous. His brief WCW chapter included the Skyscrapers tag team, a later association with Paul E. Dangerously, and a United States Championship challenge against Lex Luger. The dates matter: a career retrospective places Calaway’s move to WCW in 1989, while Sports Illustrated dates his on-screen debut to January 1990. The Undertaker character arrived later, in WWF.
10 things to know about Mark Calaway in WCW
-
He wrestled as Mean Mark Callous
Calaway’s WCW ring name was Mean Mark Callous—not The Undertaker. Sports Illustrated identifies his January 1990 on-screen debut under that name. The spelling used for the WCW character is “Callous.”
-
The Undertaker character came later
Calaway’s WCW appearances preceded his best-known character. WWE’s official Undertaker profile places the character’s debut at Survivor Series 1990, after the January WCW screen debut reported by Sports Illustrated. The WCW run is therefore a pre-Undertaker chapter, not an early appearance of the supernatural persona.
-
His WCW arrival and television debut are different milestones
A career retrospective says Calaway moved into WCW in 1989; Sports Illustrated dates his on-screen debut to January 1990. Those accounts describe separate points in the timeline, so 1989 should not be presented as the date of his first televised WCW appearance. His first notable WCW team was the Skyscrapers
Calaway recalled being teamed with Danny Spivey as the Skyscrapers, with Teddy Long as their manager. The pairing gave the imposing Callous a tag-team role before WCW’s focus shifted toward singles competition.
-
The team was positioned against the Road Warriors
The retrospective describes the Skyscrapers as being set up against the Road Warriors. It also reports that Spivey left WCW before the planned Chicago Street Fight at WrestleWar, ending the partnership before that match could take place. The planned-match detail comes from WrestleTalk’s secondary account, while Calaway recalled Spivey’s departure in his Sports Illustrated interview.
-
Paul E. Dangerously became his next important associate
After Spivey left, Calaway said WCW paired him with Paul E. Dangerously, Paul Heyman’s on-screen persona. Calaway recalled traveling with Heyman and credited him with helping his career. The association marked a move away from the Skyscrapers’ tag-team presentation.
-
Heyman helped keep a WWF conversation open
Calaway said Heyman spoke with Bruce Prichard, who in turn spoke with Vince McMahon. In Calaway’s account, those conversations kept communication open with WWF as he considered his career prospects. This is Calaway’s recollection of how the connection developed, not a claim that Heyman alone determined his eventual signing.

Callous wrestled singles matches before the title opportunity
WrestleTalk’s retrospective lists singles matches against Johnny Ace, Tommy Rich, Eddie Gilbert, and Junkyard Dog ahead of the marquee title challenge. Those opponents show that his WCW work was not limited to tag matches, although the available accounts do not establish a complete match ledger or a reliable win-loss total.
-
He challenged Lex Luger for the United States title
At The Great American Bash in 1990, Callous challenged Lex Luger for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship and lost, according to the WrestleTalk retrospective. It was a significant singles opportunity in his WCW run, but he did not leave the event as champion.

Calaway later described a discouraging contract meeting
In a 2020 Sports Illustrated interview feature, Calaway recalled that after being in WCW just under a year, he asked for a modest contract increase. He said Jim Herd, Ole Anderson, and Jim Barnett were present, and remembered being told: “Mark, you’re a great athlete, but no one is ever going to pay money to see you wrestle.” That line is Calaway’s later recollection of the meeting, not an independently verified transcript.
What the WCW chapter shows
Callous’s WCW story is one of transition: from a young wrestler in a large tag-team pairing to singles matches and a title challenge, while he developed relationships that Calaway later said helped his career. The records cited here support those landmarks, but not an exact count of his WCW matches, wins, losses, or final appearance.
