After betrayal and death, a contract with Pochita turns him into Chainsaw Man. His immediate, ordinary wants remain central even as his work, relationships and the scale of the threats around him change. This primer covers the premise and character setup without detailing later manga twists.
1. Denji begins in poverty and debt
Shueisha introduces Denji as a poor boy burdened by debt who hunts devils with Pochita. VIZ’s English-language synopsis says he is trying to repay debt inherited from his parents. That hardship is the starting condition of his story, not a complete explanation of his character.

2. Pochita is Denji’s companion before becoming his heart
Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil, first presented as Denji’s close companion and partner in devil hunting. The official anime character profile says the two make a contract and Pochita becomes Denji’s heart. Their bond therefore sits at the core of the premise rather than serving as a passing origin detail.

The official anime character profile describes Denji and Pochita’s contract.
3. Betrayal and death lead to Denji’s transformation
In the official summaries, Denji is betrayed and killed while working as a devil hunter. Pochita revives him through their contract, and Denji becomes Chainsaw Man. VIZ calls the result “something new and dangerous”; the anime profile describes him as the possessor of a devil’s heart.

Those descriptions establish the broad transformation without requiring a more technical account of its mechanics. The manga is the place to follow the precise details as they emerge.
4. “Chainsaw Man” names the being Denji becomes
Denji is the person at the center of the story; Chainsaw Man is the identity he takes on after the contract changes his life. The official summaries frame him as more than an ordinary human devil hunter, but the simplest spoiler-conscious description is that he becomes a new, dangerous being with a devil’s heart.

5. Denji’s wants are practical and immediate
Early official volume descriptions frame Denji around basic rewards and concrete desires. Later publisher summaries still portray him as hungry and making choices under extreme pressure. Those short descriptions point to a recurring contrast: Denji’s wants can sound simple, but the situations he faces make satisfying them anything but simple.
It would be reductive to treat those wants as his entire psychology. They are an important part of the premise, not a complete character profile.
Rank #4
6. He enters an organized devil-hunting world
Denji’s work connects him to Public Safety Special Division 4. The official anime character page identifies Makima, Aki, Power and Himeno among the people around him. It describes Aki as Denji’s senior colleague, Power as a blood fiend, and Himeno as Aki’s partner. These ties place Denji inside a team and an institution, not just in a series of solitary fights.
7. Relationships complicate the survival story
Denji’s bond with Pochita and his connections to other characters complicate a premise that might otherwise look like a straightforward struggle to stay alive. Official volume summaries point to conflicts involving Denji and named characters, including later material involving Asa and Yoru. The emotional significance of those developments depends on the manga chapters themselves, so treating them in detail would require spoilers.

8. The threats grow while Denji stays at the center
Shueisha’s volume summaries move from Denji’s personal wants and immediate predicaments toward conflicts with consequences for a wider society. That progression suggests a change in scale, not a claim that every arc follows the same pattern. Denji’s needs remain a useful way to understand the personal stakes even when the danger reaches beyond him.
9. The publication dates reflect different source framings
VIZ says the series began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018. Shueisha’s Japanese series page labels its start as 2019 issue 1. These are the sources’ own publication descriptions; they should be reported in their respective contexts rather than forced into a single date.
10. The manga and anime offer different entry points
VIZ’s catalog lists Chainsaw Man Volume 1, a box set and the Season 1 Blu-ray. Readers who want to start with the source story can look for Volume 1; those who prefer animation can begin with the anime. Product availability, formats and prices depend on region and retailer.
For collectors, Bandai lists an Anime Heroes Denji & Pochita figure. Its product page gives a height of 6.5 inches and more than 20 articulation points; the displayed $23.99 MSRP is a page-listed price accessed in 2026 and may change. See Bandai’s product page for the listing.
VIZ’s catalog and series details are at VIZ Media; Shueisha’s series page is at Shueisha / Shonen Jump+.
