Shawn Michaels retired from regular in-ring competition after WrestleMania XXVI in 2010, but he did not disappear from WWE or wrestling. He later returned as a coach and NXT leader, explored acting, published an autobiography, and wrestled one match in 2018. Here are ten documented parts of that second act, with the distinction between a full-time retirement and later exceptions kept clear.
1. He entered the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011
After his 2010 match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI, Michaels was inducted individually into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011. WWE describes the WrestleMania bout as his last stand in his regular in-ring career. WWE’s profile of Shawn Michaels records the induction.

2. He returned for occasional WWE appearances
Retiring from regular competition did not mean leaving WWE altogether. Michaels made occasional appearances after 2010, though those appearances were not a return to a regular wrestling schedule. That distinction matters because he later wrestled a single match, rather than resuming his earlier run. The San Antonio Express-News account of his later roles provides the broader timeline.
3. He wrote an autobiography about faith and a “second life”
In 2015, Michaels published Wrestling for My Life: The Legend, the Reality and the Faith of a WWE Superstar. He described the book as “a look at my faith and more of an autobiography on my second life.” The phrase refers to the personal change he wrote about; it does not mean he permanently left WWE, where he later worked with NXT talent. WWE’s interview about the book discusses its focus.

4. He explored acting
Michaels appeared in the 2017 film Pure Country: Pure Heart. In an interview that year, he said he was open to acting opportunities if they arose. That supports describing acting as an avenue he explored, not as a full-time career change. Wrestling Inc.’s 2017 interview report covers the film and his comments.
5. He became an NXT Performance Center trainer
In 2017, Michaels was introduced as a trainer at WWE’s Performance Center, working with wrestlers in the NXT developmental system. This was a post-retirement return to teaching in a WWE setting. It should not be confused with the Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy, which operated before his 2010 retirement: in a 2013 WWE interview, Michaels recalled teaching Daniel Bryan there. The Express-News report on his NXT role dates the trainer introduction, while WWE’s 2013 interview about Bryan places the academy work earlier.

- In 1995, two wrestling companies squared off on Monday night television to compete head to head in an unprecedented confrontation. On one side, Vince McMahon, the promoter who created WWE and made the industry what it is today. On the other, WCW, owned by media giant Ted Turner, and run by an ambitious man named Eric Bischoff. This is the whole story, told by those who created it, lived it, and
6. He went on the road with NXT to coach in person
Michaels also traveled with NXT rather than limiting his coaching to the Performance Center. In a 2017 interview, he explained that watching footage alone could not show him everything about how performers handled the live environment. Going to shows let him observe that environment and help wrestlers in person. His comments appear in the Wrestling Inc. report.
7. He moved from producing to leading NXT
Coaching was part of a broader backstage role. The Ringer reported that Michaels worked as an NXT producer under Triple H and became head of the NXT brand in 2022 as WWE’s senior vice president of talent development creative. That is a dated account of his position, not a confirmation of his title today. The Ringer’s 2024 profile and interview traces his move into leadership.

8. He wrestled one match after his 2010 retirement
In November 2018, Michaels returned to the ring for a tag match at WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. He teamed with Triple H against Kane and The Undertaker. The San Antonio Express-News identified it as his first match since 2010. It was a high-profile exception, not a restart of his regular in-ring career. The match is covered in the Express-News timeline.

Michaels received a second WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2019, this time as a member of D-Generation X. It was separate from his individual induction in 2011. WWE’s official profile lists both class years.
10. He kept learning while helping develop talent
Michaels has described his NXT work as an ongoing learning process, rather than presenting himself only as a veteran passing on experience. In a 2024 interview with The Ringer, he said: “I can tell you, I’m 59 years old. I’ve been doing this for 40 years, and I learn stuff every day. And if you’re not learning, you’re not growing.” The remark reflects how he viewed the job at that time; it is not a current check of his WWE title. The Ringer interview includes his comments on developing talent.
