Starrcade ’97 ended with Sting defeating Hollywood Hogan to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship—but the confusing finish kept the long-awaited victory from feeling like a clean, decisive payoff for many viewers. Held in Washington, D.C., on December 28, 1997, the event was both a major WCW milestone and a lasting example of how execution can complicate a landmark result.

What happened at Starrcade 1997?

WCW’s flagship pay-per-view took place on December 28, 1997, at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. The headline match was Hollywood Hogan defending the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Sting. Sting won the match and the title, ending a long build between the two wrestlers. WWE’s official event archive records the result and card on its WCW Starrcade 1997 page.

10 things to know about Starrcade ’97

1. Sting’s return was the culmination of a long wait

Sting’s confrontation with Hogan was not just another title match: it was the payoff to an extended storyline that had kept Sting apart from the nWo leader. WWE describes the return as the culmination of more than a year of anticipation in The History of WCW. That build made the championship match the event’s defining attraction.

2. The match carried WCW-versus-nWo stakes

Hogan represented the New World Order, while Sting had become the central figure opposing it. The stakes therefore reached beyond the championship belt: the bout was framed as a decisive confrontation over WCW’s identity and direction. That made the audience’s expectation of a conclusive result especially high.

3. Sting officially won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

The central fact is straightforward: Sting defeated Hogan and became champion. The controversy concerns how the finish unfolded, not the official result. WWE’s event archive lists Sting as the winner; the outcome should not be recast as a draw or title retention.

4. The finish muddied the payoff

The referee’s count and Bret Hart’s intervention interrupted what many viewers expected to be a clean, unambiguous conclusion. WWE’s corporate history describes it as “the main event’s muddy ending leaves fans feeling disappointed.” That is WWE’s characterization of the audience response; it does not establish a specific backstage explanation or prove what anyone intended.

5. Bret Hart had a separate role on the card

Hart was the special guest referee for Larry Zbyszko versus Eric Bischoff, a match tied to control of Nitro. He also intervened at the end of Sting–Hogan. The two appearances are related to the event’s story, but they are distinct facts: Hart’s assigned referee role was in the Zbyszko–Bischoff bout, while his intervention in the main event helped make its conclusion harder to read.

6. The title celebration could not erase the confusion

Sting’s victory gave WCW the championship change the storyline had promised, but the disputed count and intervention shaped how the moment landed. The result and the reaction can both be true: Sting was champion, while the execution left viewers debating whether the payoff had been delivered clearly.

7. Starrcade arrived during WCW’s peak competition with WWE

Starrcade ’97 took place amid the Monday Night Wars, when Nitro and Raw competed directly for viewers. WWE’s corporate history says WCW and Nitro led Raw in television ratings for 84 consecutive weeks, from May 1996 to March 1998. That is a television-ratings streak, not a Starrcade-specific pay-per-view figure.

8. It was a major business success for WCW

WWE calls Starrcade ’97 WCW’s most successful pay-per-view. That description conveys the event’s importance to the company, but it is not a published buy-rate, attendance, or revenue number. No such event-specific numerical figure is established in the cited account.

9. The undercard offered more than the main event

The card included several championship and rivalry matches. Notable bouts included:

  • Eddie Guerrero versus Dean Malenko for the Cruiserweight Championship
  • Goldberg versus Steve McMichael
  • Perry Saturn versus Chris Benoit
  • Diamond Dallas Page versus Curt Hennig for the United States Championship
  • Buff Bagwell versus Lex Luger

10. Its legacy is a split between payoff and execution

Starrcade ’97 delivered a historic title change and a broad card, but its most important moment is remembered through the dispute over the finish. As an interpretation rather than a measured audience statistic, that tension explains why the show can be both a landmark in WCW history and an infamous example of a major storyline payoff that did not read clearly to viewers.

Why is Starrcade 1997 still controversial?

The event’s enduring debate is not whether Sting won; the official result is clear. It is whether the sequence of the referee’s count and Hart’s intervention communicated that win in a satisfying way. WWE’s history calls the ending muddy and says it left fans disappointed, while the surviving result records preserve Sting’s championship victory. Those two parts of the record explain the event’s divided reputation without requiring unsupported claims about backstage instructions or intent.
