10 Reasons Why ‘Anora’ Won Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars

Anora won Best Picture because its Palme d’Or prestige, Mikey Madison’s breakthrough performance, Sean Baker’s complete authorship, guild momentum and independent-film identity reinforced one another.

Anora won Best Picture because it was more than an acclaimed independent film: it was simultaneously a Palme d’Or winner, a breakthrough showcase for Mikey Madison, a fully authored Sean Baker film, a technically controlled crowd-pleaser, a socially grounded character drama and a late-season guild favorite.

At the 97th Oscars on March 2, 2025, the Academy gave Anora five awards: Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay, Film Editing and Actress in a Leading Role. The Best Picture award went to producers Alex Coco, Samantha Quan and Sean Baker. The result may look surprising beside Conclave’s BAFTA Best Film win, but it makes sense as a convergence of several strong arguments rather than as a single-issue upset.

1. Cannes gave Anora immediate prestige

Before the American awards campaign began, Anora had already won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the festival’s highest prize. Cannes presented the film as the story of Ani, a Brooklyn strip-club dancer whose seemingly perfect romance with the son of a Russian oligarch is threatened when his family intervenes.

That victory did not guarantee an Oscar. Cannes and the Academy reward different things, and many Palme d’Or winners do not go on to win Best Picture. But it gave Anora a powerful starting point. The film arrived in the awards conversation not as an untested independent release, but as an internationally validated work of serious cinema.

It also supplied voters with a simple, persuasive narrative: this was already one of the year’s most celebrated films at one of the world’s most influential festivals. The Palme d’Or reduced the perceived risk of backing a movie that was unconventional in subject, tone and scale.

2. Its genre mixture made challenging material unusually accessible

Anora is difficult to classify. It begins as a romantic fantasy, moves through sex-work drama and screwball comedy, becomes a chase film, and eventually settles into social realism and emotional devastation. Its central premise resembles a contemporary Cinderella story, but the fairy tale repeatedly crashes into money, family power and the limits of Ani’s marriage.

That tonal range is one of the film’s greatest awards-season advantages. A voter could admire its formal ambition and social observations while also enjoying its speed, jokes, confrontations and escalating chaos. It is not a solemn film that audiences merely feel obliged to respect; it is an entertaining, high-stakes experience that keeps changing shape.

The Academy has no published explanation showing that this genre blend caused individual voters to choose the film. The broader conclusion is an inference from the film’s reception and awards pattern. Still, Anora offered an unusually large entry point: viewers who disagreed about its politics or its depiction of sex work could still respond to its comic timing, suspense and emotional force.

3. Ani is a protagonist with agency, not merely a symbol

The film’s social themes work because they are carried by a character who feels fully alive. Ani—short for Anora—is aggressive, funny, strategic and professionally competent. She knows how to read customers, negotiate situations and perform confidence. She is not presented as a passive object in a wealthy man’s fantasy or as a representative figure whose only purpose is to illustrate exploitation.

Her apparent Cinderella transformation is also more complicated than it first appears. Ani makes choices, pursues what she wants and recognizes the material advantages of marrying Ivan. At the same time, the film shows how quickly her access to wealth can be withdrawn when Ivan’s family decides that the relationship is unacceptable.

That agency gives the movie an emotional center while the plot becomes increasingly chaotic. Viewers can root for Ani without reducing her to either a victim or an uncomplicated success story. For a Best Picture contender, that is crucial: the film’s ideas are attached to a protagonist audiences can follow, argue about and remember.

4. Mikey Madison turned the film into a breakthrough performance vehicle

Mikey Madison won the Academy Award for Actress in a Leading Role for playing Ani. She also won BAFTA’s Leading Actress award, while Anora won BAFTA for Casting. Those results showed that Madison’s performance was not simply a critics’ talking point; it connected with major industry voting bodies.

Madison has to carry nearly every register the film demands. Ani is loud, flirtatious and combative in one scene, then calculating, frightened or emotionally exposed in the next. The performance makes her physical confidence believable without hiding the vulnerability beneath it. Madison’s comic timing also helps the film move rapidly without making Ani seem like a collection of punchlines.

Interviews with Madison and Sean Baker describe a collaborative process in which Madison helped shape Ani’s voice, behavior and physicality. Baker had been impressed by her earlier work and selected her for a role that required both sustained energy and a difficult emotional reversal.

A Best Picture campaign benefits when its lead performance is inseparable from the film’s identity. Madison did not merely receive a strong showcase from Anora; she made the movie’s anger, humor, momentum and final emotional shift feel embodied.

5. Sean Baker’s authorship was unusually complete

Baker wrote, directed, edited and produced Anora. The Academy awarded him Oscars for Directing, Original Screenplay and Film Editing, and he shared the Best Picture award as a producer with Alex Coco and Samantha Quan. In total, the film won five Oscars: Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay, Film Editing and Actress in a Leading Role.

That concentration of creative responsibility made the film look like a unified director’s statement. Baker’s decisions about dialogue, performance, staging, pacing and structure all appear to belong to the same artistic vision. The movie does not feel like a screenplay handed to one director, an awards performance added by another creative team, and a separate editing style imposed at the end.

Baker’s four Oscar wins connected to the film also gave the victory a historic dimension. He was recognized not only as the director of the Best Picture winner, but as the filmmaker who wrote, shaped and assembled much of what voters were honoring.

This does not mean the film was the work of one person alone. Its Best Picture Oscar formally belonged to the producing team, and Madison’s performance and the work of the cast and crew were essential. But Baker’s unusually visible authorship made Anora easy to understand as a complete piece of filmmaking rather than merely a successful awards package.

6. The editing turns apparent disorder into controlled momentum

The plot repeatedly threatens to spin out of control: a whirlwind romance, a marriage, an attempted annulment, a frantic search and a series of confrontations involving people with very different levels of money and power. Yet the film’s chaos is carefully organized. Scenes accumulate pressure, release it through comedy or violence, and then redirect the story toward a more serious emotional register.

Baker’s Oscar for Film Editing confirms that the Academy recognized the construction of that experience. Editing is especially important in Anora because the movie’s energy could easily have become exhausting or incoherent. Instead, its rhythm keeps the audience oriented even when the characters are not.

The BAFTAs provide useful context: Conclave won BAFTA for Editing, while Anora won the Oscar. That split does not weaken the case for Baker’s work. It shows that Anora did not need to dominate every craft precursor to build a Best Picture argument. Its editing win contributed to the larger perception that the film was technically precise beneath its unruly surface.

7. Its social themes emerge from character and plot rather than speeches

Baker has repeatedly focused on sex workers and people living on the economic margins. In Anora, sex is shown as labor and as a commodity, but the film also explores the choices, freedoms, risks and power imbalances surrounding that labor. It neither turns Ani into a moral lesson nor pretends that money removes the dangers attached to her work.

The class critique is similarly dramatized. Contracts, money, immigration, family authority and physical access all become part of the story. Ani’s apparent entry into extreme wealth is conditional. Ivan’s family, by contrast, can summon lawyers, enforcers and other resources to restore the social order it prefers.

That approach makes the themes difficult to dismiss as an awards-season lecture. The film does not stop the action to explain its politics; it makes class power visible through what characters can buy, cancel, threaten or escape. Baker said after Cannes that he hoped the film would help chip away at stigma surrounding sex work, but the movie’s argument is primarily built into its situations and relationships.

That distinction matters in a Best Picture race. Voters could recognize the film’s social perspective without having to endorse a single speech or slogan. The themes are inseparable from the entertainment.

8. It made an outsider perspective feel central

Anora is rooted in Brighton Beach and in Russian-speaking New York communities, while also moving through luxury apartments, nightclubs and the adult-entertainment economy. Ani is presented as a Russian-speaking Uzbek American sex worker, a protagonist whose language, labor and community are rarely treated as the center of a major American awards film.

The specificity gives the movie an identity that a more generalized class drama might not have had. Its setting is not decorative; it shapes the conversations, relationships and networks that drive the plot. The film’s New York is multilingual, economically divided and connected by forms of labor that affluent characters can use without fully seeing the people who provide them.

At the same time, the story remains legible beyond its particular communities. Desire, money, precarity, family control and unequal power are recognizable themes. That combination—specific cultural perspective with broadly understandable stakes—helped Anora feel distinctive without becoming inaccessible.

9. PGA and DGA wins converted enthusiasm into professional momentum

The most important late-season evidence came on February 8, 2025, when the Producers Guild of America named Anora the winner of the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The same night, the Directors Guild of America named Sean Baker its winner for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Theatrical Feature Film.

Those were especially meaningful victories because they came from professional communities whose work overlaps closely with the core questions behind Best Picture: what was produced, directed and successfully brought to the screen. They did not prove that the Oscar was locked, but they changed the film’s position from admired independent contender to credible consensus choice among influential industry voters.

The timing mattered as well. By the final stretch of the campaign, Anora had Cannes prestige, strong critical support, a major acting contender, and now wins from both producers and directors. The guild results supplied the kind of practical industry validation that can matter when voters are choosing among several respected films.

The Academy’s Best Picture electorate is broader than either guild, so it would be too strong to treat the PGA and DGA results as a mathematical prediction. Their value was cumulative: they reinforced the idea that Anora worked both as an artistic achievement and as a fully realized production.

10. It offered a compelling independent-film victory narrative

Public reporting placed Anora at a low-budget independent scale of roughly $6 million, rather than presenting it as a studio spectacle built around franchise recognition. That figure should be understood as a reported production-budget estimate, not as a complete accounting ledger. Even with that qualification, the film’s Oscar result made its scale part of the story.

Baker’s career helped give the win emotional context. He had spent years making independent films such as Tangerine, The Florida Project and Red Rocket, often focusing on people and communities outside conventional prestige-drama settings. His Oscar-night declaration—“Long live independent film”—captured what the victory symbolized for many viewers.

Independence alone does not win Best Picture. Plenty of small films receive attention without becoming Academy-wide choices. Anora made the independent-film narrative persuasive because it combined that identity with a Palme d’Or, an acclaimed lead performance, accessible storytelling, technical control and guild momentum.

The result allowed voters to honor several things at once: an established filmmaker’s long-term body of work, a genuine breakthrough actress, international festival recognition, a contemporary New York story and a theatrical film that did not depend on franchise scale or visual spectacle.

Why the win can feel surprising in retrospect

Anora did not sweep every major precursor. At the BAFTAs, Conclave won Best Film and Editing. That can make the Oscar result look like a sudden upset if the awards season is reduced to a list of one-to-one predictions.

But the film’s case was never based on total dominance in every category. It assembled a different kind of profile:

Element What it contributed
Palme d’Or International prestige and early validation.
Ani and Madison A vivid emotional center and a widely recognized breakthrough performance.
Baker’s four creative Oscars Evidence of unified writing, directing, editing and producing authorship.
PGA and DGA victories Late-season support from closely related professional voting communities.
Genre and social perspective A film that was both formally ambitious and immediately entertaining.
Independent-film symbolism A broader narrative about artistic risk, career recognition and scale.

No public ranked breakdown of the Academy’s Best Picture ballot proves that any one of these factors persuaded a particular voter. The strongest explanation is therefore a synthesis, not a claim about private motives. Anora was able to satisfy several different ideas of what a Best Picture should be: important but not preachy, ambitious but accessible, character-driven but technically accomplished, and distinctive without becoming alienating.

What the win ultimately says about Anora

The film won because its strengths reinforced one another. Cannes made it prestigious. Ani made it emotionally immediate. Madison made the protagonist unforgettable. Baker’s authorship made the movie feel coherent. The editing made its instability exhilarating rather than shapeless. Its social themes gave the entertainment weight, while the guild wins demonstrated that the enthusiasm had reached beyond critics and festival audiences.

That is why describing Anora as merely a surprise upset misses the point. It was a convergence candidate: a Palme d’Or film, a star-making performance showcase, a director’s statement, a socially pointed character drama and an independent-film success story. Another movie could beat it in an individual precursor category and still lose the larger Best Picture argument.
