The most expensive celebrations ever reported range from a modern Indian wedding said to have cost more than $600 million to a 1970s royal celebration whose total depends on what expenses are counted. There is no authoritative global ranking: published lists mix weddings, birthdays, public festivities and venue openings, and their figures vary in reliability and scope. The ten events below are a curated comparison of widely reported costs, not an audited leaderboard.
How to read the figures
All amounts below are reported US-dollar figures, not necessarily audited budgets. They are presented as quoted by the named sources, without converting historical totals for inflation; the dollar figures therefore do not all have the same purchasing power. Some costs are estimates, and some may include expenses beyond the celebration itself. The ordering follows the reported headline amounts, not a claim that the events can be precisely ranked.
Ten lavish celebrations and their reported costs
1. Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding celebrations — India, 2024
Reported cost: more than $600 million. The National reported an estimate exceeding $600 million for the celebrations, while Vanity Fair described the total as a reported $600 million. Neither figure is an official, audited budget. Vanity Fair reported that festivities stretched across months before the July 12–14 Mumbai wedding and drew about 2,000 guests. The National described 11 pre-wedding events and reported that about $300 million was allocated to those festivities; it also cited reported performance fees of $9 million for Rihanna and $10 million for Justin Bieber. These are press-reported figures, not disclosed accounts.
2. The Persepolis celebration — Iran, 1971
Reported cost: $500 million, according to the Times of India. That headline figure is not a settled event budget. Accounts disagree about the total and, crucially, about whether infrastructure and other associated expenses belong in the cost of the celebration. Waddingtons discusses this accounting problem; a separate modern listicle gives a much higher inflation-adjusted range, also amid disputed estimates. Those figures use different accounting boundaries and currency bases, so they should not be combined or treated as a verified total.

3. William and Catherine’s wedding — United Kingdom, 2011
Reported cost: an estimated $70 million, according to Legit.ng. This is a listicle estimate, not an audited wedding budget. The figure’s accounting scope is not established in the cited report, so it should not be read as the couple’s personal spending or as a like-for-like comparison with private-event costs.
4. Vanisha Mittal and Amit Bhatia’s wedding — France, 2004
Recorded cost: US$55 million, according to Guinness World Records. Guinness describes a six-day wedding and calls it the only private function held at the Palace of Versailles. Among the reported events were a re-enactment of the couple’s courtship and an engagement ceremony at Versailles, with performances including Shah Rukh Khan and Kylie Minogue. This is the strongest record-style cost figure among the events in this list, though it does not make every other celebration’s estimate directly comparable.

Reported cost: $31 million, according to Legit.ng. The source includes the opening among expensive celebrations, but the cited material does not establish a detailed accounting basis for the figure. A hotel opening is also a different kind of event from a private wedding or birthday, so the headline total is not a direct measure of lavishness per guest.

A South China Morning Post search-result record describes a two-week celebration, a Michael Jackson performance for a crowd of 60,000 at a custom-built stadium, and a dinner for 3,000. Whatitcosts says the concert alone cost $16 million. The sources do not establish that these components account for the full headline total.
8. Elizabeth Brooks’s bat mitzvah — United States, year not stated in the cited lists
Reported cost: $10 million, according to Legit.ng and Whatitcosts. Both lists include the event at that figure, but the cited material does not identify an audited budget or a detailed breakdown. Its placement here reflects the published headline amount, not a verified comparison with the larger celebrations.

Why the biggest reported total is not automatically the clearest winner
The figures answer different questions. Guinness World Records records US$55 million for the Mittal-Bhatia wedding, while the Ambani-Merchant celebration’s much larger total is a press estimate. Persepolis illustrates a separate problem: if infrastructure or other public and lasting expenses are counted, a “party cost” can mean something broader than event spending. For birthdays, weddings, a hotel opening and a public royal celebration to sit in one ranking, readers need to distinguish a documented record from an estimate and an event bill from costs associated with the occasion.
