What makes an abandoned toy site unsettling is often what remains: doll parts, empty displays, and rooms once built for making or selling playthings. This subjective list includes real factories alongside a wholesaler, a toy shop, and a former mill complex. The photographs and reports cited here date from 2011 to 2016; they do not establish what any site looks like today or whether it is accessible.
Ten abandoned toy sites, ranked by their documented atmosphere
This is an editorial ranking, not an objective creepiness score. The entries are ordered by the specific traces described in the cited photographs and reporting, with unclear names and site types identified rather than assumed.
1. Porcelain doll factory, Spain
The factory’s name and precise location are not established in the cited coverage. Photographs show doll parts left behind, a detail that makes this one of the most disturbing sites in the roundup. The source does not establish why the factory closed, so no closure story can be reliably attached to it. WebUrbanist’s 2015 feature is the basis for the identification and visual description.
2. Lesney/Matchbox factory, Hackney Marshes, London
Lesney was founded in 1947, according to WebUrbanist. Its last and largest factory closed in 1982, and the complex was demolished in 2010. The site is now occupied by Matchmakers Wharf. The cited photographs show a vandalized, stripped industrial complex—not a factory preserved in its original working state. WebUrbanist’s 2015 account documents the dates and former-site description.

3. Toy Loft, Danielson, Connecticut
Toy Loft was not a factory: it was a toy shop and recreation complex in a former mill at 42 Maple Street. A 2016 report says local authorities closed the complex after fire and building inspectors cited safety violations. Photographs and descriptions of old toys and arcade displays give the place its eerie, frozen-in-time quality, but the closure context matters more than the atmosphere: it was shut for safety reasons, not presented as a visitor attraction. The Vintage News’ 2016 report supplies the address and closure context.
4. Former Soviet toy factory
The entry is identified broadly as a former Soviet toy factory; the cited material does not establish a more precise location or official factory name. Photographs show a colorful but empty industrial interior. The contrast between bright surfaces and the absence of activity is the documented basis for its place here, not evidence of any particular event at the site. WebUrbanist’s 2015 feature presents the photographs and identification.
5. Kanga Wooden Toy Factory, Perth, Australia
Kanga was a wooden toy factory in Perth. WebUrbanist reports that it was photographed about a month before its demolition in 2010. That timing makes the images a record of a site approaching its end, rather than evidence that the factory remains abandoned today. The cited material does not give a more detailed account of its closure. WebUrbanist’s 2015 feature provides the demolition timing.
6. Smart Union factory, Guangdong, China
Smart Union’s factory was in Guangdong, north of Hong Kong. WebUrbanist reported in 2015 that the company’s bankruptcy put more than 6,000 employees out of work, attributing the collapse to financial mismanagement. The figure and explanation should be understood as claims reported by that article, not independently verified primary-source findings. Its photographs document the factory as an abandoned industrial site; they do not establish its present condition. WebUrbanist’s 2015 report is the source for the location and employment claim.

7. Toy factory in Zhangmutou, southern China
The roundup identifies a toy factory in Zhangmutou, southern China, but does not provide a company name or enough detail to confirm a closure date or later fate. Its inclusion is therefore best read as a photographed abandoned factory site, not a fully documented company history. WebUrbanist’s 2015 feature supplies the identification.
8. Unidentified doll factory, photographed in 2011
This entry is identified only as a doll factory photographed in 2011; the source does not establish its name or location. The dated images support a description of how the site appeared then, but not a claim about its current condition, closure circumstances, or access. WebUrbanist’s 2015 feature includes the photographs.
Rank #4
- Velvet antique finish: Soft faux velvet covers in black, emerald green, and burgundy feature gold-foil Baroque patterns and textured page edges, creating the rich look of a coordinated antique library book stack
- Rigid, shape-retaining construction: High-density thick cardboard and internal support help the decorative book boxes stay crisp and structured when stacked, arranged side by side, or displayed separately
- Magnetic hidden storage: The large black and medium green books open to organize TV remotes, keys, jewelry, watches, passports, loose change, and other small items; the shallow burgundy book is best for flat keepsakes or decorative display
- Three graduated sizes: Large 10.63 x 7.56 x 1.89 in, medium 9.49 x 6.77 x 1.50 in, and small 8.66 x 5.94 x 0.98 in; the varied sizes create balanced depth when stacked or styled separately
- Versatile vintage decor and gift: Style the set on a coffee table, bookshelf, mantel, entryway console, or nightstand; the old-world look suits traditional and dark-academia interiors and makes a distinctive housewarming, birthday, or wedding gift
9. Pensick & Gordon building, Los Angeles
Pensick & Gordon was a wholesale toy business, so its building should not be described as a toy factory. The roundup documents it as a former toy-related business site, but the cited coverage does not establish a detailed closure history or later use. WebUrbanist’s 2015 feature identifies the Los Angeles building.
10. Matador Toy Factory, Austria
The source names a Matador toy factory in Austria, but the cited material does not establish further detail about its closure or what happened to the property afterward. It belongs in this list as a toy-factory site identified in the roundup, with its history less fully documented than entries such as Lesney or Toy Loft. WebUrbanist’s 2015 feature is the cited basis for the entry.

Why abandoned toy sites feel different
Steve, writing for WebUrbanist in 2015, captured the emotional contrast: “There are few things sadder than an abandoned toy, and abandoned toy factories take that sense of lost innocence to dramatically deeper depths of despair.” The effect comes from the collision of a familiar, playful purpose with industrial rooms left empty—or, in the case of the Spanish factory, doll parts left behind. These are visual impressions from published photographs, not evidence of supernatural activity or stories about former workers.
What happened to the sites?
The documented fates vary sharply, which is why “abandoned toy factories” is an imperfect label for the whole list.
| Site | What it was | Documented closure or later fate |
|---|---|---|
| Lesney/Matchbox, Hackney Marshes | Toy factory | Closed in 1982; demolished in 2010; the former site is occupied by Matchmakers Wharf, according to WebUrbanist’s 2015 account. |
| Smart Union, Guangdong | Toy factory | WebUrbanist reported in 2015 that the company’s bankruptcy put more than 6,000 employees out of work; current site status is not established. |
| Kanga, Perth | Wooden toy factory | Photographed about a month before demolition in 2010, according to WebUrbanist’s 2015 account. |
| Toy Loft, Danielson | Toy shop and recreation complex in a former mill | Local authorities closed the complex after inspectors cited safety violations, according to The Vintage News in 2016. |
| Spanish porcelain doll factory | Porcelain doll factory | Closure reason and later fate are not established in the cited coverage. |
| Zhangmutou factory | Toy factory | Closure date and later fate are not established in the cited coverage. |
| Former Soviet factory | Toy factory | Precise location, closure date, and later fate are not established in the cited coverage. |
| 2011 doll factory | Doll factory; name and location unclear | Photographed in 2011; closure date and later fate are not established. |
| Pensick & Gordon, Los Angeles | Wholesale toy building, not a factory | Detailed closure history and later use are not established in the cited coverage. |
| Matador, Austria | Toy factory | Detailed closure history and later use are not established in the cited coverage. |
Gizmodo’s 2013 photo roundup independently includes several of the same subjects and notes that the Algonquin Toastmaster factory had been torn down after a 2010 fire. That is a separate site, not one of the ten entries above, and should not be confused with the toy locations. Gizmodo’s 2013 roundup provides that comparison.
Can you visit these abandoned toy sites?
The cited coverage does not verify current ownership, public access, or safety conditions for the ten sites. Do not assume that an abandoned-looking building is open to visitors. In Toy Loft’s case, the 2016 account specifically says authorities closed the complex after safety violations; photographs in older articles are not permission to enter.
