1. Abbey Road Studios — London, England
Abbey Road’s official pages describe multiple recording and mastering rooms. Studio Two, which opened in 1932, is identified by the studio as its most famous recording space; that is the studio’s own characterization, not an objective global ranking (Abbey Road Studios: The Studios).

Abbey Road’s Studio One reopened after a six-month refurbishment completed in 2025. The Associated Press reported that the work prioritized preserving the room’s acoustics and maintained its reverberation time at 2.3 seconds, the same figure reported for the room in the 1970s (Associated Press, April 3, 2025).
In March 2026, MusicRadar reported that the studio had expanded its instrument collection with items including a Teenage Engineering OP-1, Roland Juno-106, and TR-808. Abbey Road’s director of marketing and creative, Mark Robertson, told MusicRadar: “Sometimes we’ve found that people find the idea of coming here a bit daunting” (MusicRadar, March 25, 2026).

2. Capitol Studios — Hollywood, Los Angeles, California
Capitol’s published specifications describe Studio A as a 1,500-plus-square-foot room built in 1956, with capacity for up to 50 musicians. Louvered wall panels allow adjustable decay time, and Studios A and B can be combined by removing the wall between them. Capitol also describes eight underground echo chambers, each approximately 2,000 cubic feet, with a maximum reverberation period of five seconds (Capitol Studios facility information). These are the studio’s published figures, not independent comparative measurements.
3. Metropolis Studios — London, England
Metropolis describes five main studios serving different needs, including large string recordings, collaborative writing, full-band tracking, and vocal sessions. Its studios use distinct analogue consoles and offer stereo and 5.1 mixing capability. The facility also describes an Atmos room for recording, mixing, mastering, broadcasting, and playback. The studio directs prospective clients to contact its manager about bookings; its cited studio page does not publish rates (Metropolis Studios: Our Studios).

Electric Lady’s Studio B page lists an SSL 9000J console, Pro Tools HDX, custom Augspurger main monitors, ATC SCM50 ASL monitors, and Yamaha NS-10 monitors. The published dimensions are 21 by 19 feet for the live room and 27 by 17 feet for the control room. The page associates Studio B with Patti Smith’s Horses, D’Angelo’s Voodoo, and Frank Ocean’s Blonde (Electric Lady Studios: Studio B).
5–10. Other names from a notable-studio list
A 2017 GRAMMY.com summary of Billboard’s selection also names Conway Studios, Eastwest Studios, Larrabee Studios, Record Plant, The Village Studios, Sun Studio, Ocean Way, Criteria Recording Studios, Electric Ladyland Studios, Power Station, Island Sound Studios, Gateway Mastering, AIR Studios, and Real World Studios (GRAMMY.com, 2017). This is a historical selection, not proof that every facility currently operates under the same name, accepts public bookings, or belongs in a current price ranking. These candidates are included as further leads for comparing notable facilities—not as verified entries in a top-ten cost order.

How to compare real studio quotes
Ask each facility for a quote tied to the same kind of session and date. An hourly rate in one room cannot be fairly compared with a package for another room if the included staff, equipment access, minimum booking, or extra charges differ.
- Specify the project: for example, orchestral tracking, a full-band session, vocals, mixing, mastering, film work, or immersive audio.
- Request the quote’s date, currency, billing basis, and minimum session length.
- Ask which room, equipment, and engineer or engineers are included, and whether additional technical staff are required.
- Clarify overtime, setup and teardown, and whether mixing, mastering, taxes, or lodging are billed separately.
- Confirm the room’s capacity, acoustic characteristics, technical format, availability, and booking terms directly with the studio.
Until those details are available on a like-for-like basis, calling any ten studios “the most expensive” would imply a comparison the published figures do not support.
